I'll summarize:

Glad you have been to Hunter recently, although I don't understand why you would go to a ski area you also trash for certain things. I can trash ski areas for certain things I don't like, but I choose to just not ski at those places. Sorry, but to make a blanket statement that Hunter is a complete zoo on weekends COMPARED TO OTHER SKI RESORTS is just inaccurate and wrong.

A day on Hunter One? You're preaching to the choir pal! I've spent weekends and whole holiday weeks over on Hunter One as a ski instructor at Hunter and did so for better than 10 years. I know everything about the mountain there is to know.

As for the negatives about beginner terrain, most of the problems come from the fact that the area is full of BEGINNERS! If everyone was just a little patient and gave each other some slack, there would be no issues. Those who think that a beginner area should allow for even spacing of students is dreaming!
This is a problem I see at most ski areas-the beginner terrain is crowded.

As for rental problems, get there early (before 8:30am) and there won't be problems. Show up on the slow boat at 10:30am and you'll be lucky to wait an hour to get gear if any is left!

Now I'm going to stop posting about this topic for good (I'm sure some are very pleased). It's pointless because people are going to think the way they think no matter what.

[Does that make me hater? If so, then I am balanced by at least one Hunter shill on this board who has a financial interest in Hunter and who explodes with anger every time someone mentions a downside to the place.

I am not a shill(nice try - I'm a city boy too... I speak yiddish)- I really resent you thinking that I'm lying to get people to come to the mountain - It really show your class... And adds to my argument what I think you are but can't say in this forum...

I am a resident of the the village of Hunter with a vested interest in it's success - not financially for myself, but for my friends to succeed.. I actually work in Albany...
I support where I live - who wouldnt??
I am active in the politics of the town and want it to do well as a ski town and get over the past that everyone hates..

I will defend it at every turn... Just as I did when I lived in NYC...
If somebody disses it - and I don't agree - YES - I will raise my voice - just like you having to spew your negativity...

Lame....

Jim - we've had this argument with Hunter bashers at least a dozen times over the last 15 years...
But I've been thanked many more times then that by people who I've given betas to about Hunter... People who have rediscovered it since they were there on a Presidents Daya Weekend on 1985 ad it was a mess..

Like I always say - the winey intermediates are the ones who complain the most about Hunter..

Posers and gapers....

Well, the current discussion was about the beginner terrain and I think Windham is a much better choice for beginners. I think Hunter is a bad choice cuz of the crowds on Hunter one. Like I said before, there's a lot I like about Hunter but also things I don't like. I would not recommend it to beginners on weekends. I still go there, less often but still go there and I have a good time. Not sure why there's a mindset here that any criticism of Hunter is verboten.

Since I didn't trash Hunter, we are in complete accord. I pointed out things i didn't like, and things i did like.

lol. well, we just have differing opinions. Hunter is definitely in my top 5 worst east coast resorts when it comes to crowds.

As for the negatives about beginner terrain, most of the problems come from the fact that the area is full of BEGINNERS! Hunter gets a lot of first time skiers and riders. There are a lot of positive reasons why this is so, but in the end that popularity has overwhelmed Hunter One on weekends with crowds that are at times the worst I've seen, imho. What you say is true of all mountains. It only becomes more true at Hunter because of the sheer density of skiers on Hunter One.

As for rental problems, get there early (before 8:30am) and there won't be problems. Show up on the slow boat at 10:30am and you'll be lucky to wait an hour to get gear if any is left!

Of course, I agree. But what I'm saying is that at 10:30 Hunter is worse than most other resorts at 10:30, and same for 8:30. They just get more people and can't handle that number of people.

Now I'm going to stop posting about this topic for good (I'm sure some are very pleased). It's pointless because people are going to think the way they think no matter what.

Not true. You made a rational point about the beginner slopes that I agree with in part, and that tempered my point of view. I CAN be persuaded if a rational argument is made, unlike others here who prefer to scream and try to shout down any dissent. But I will stop posting on this thread also. Agree to disagree.

Cheers!

Because we ski Hunter just about every weekend and really just dissagree with you - a lot..... Until a couple years ago - JIimG was an instructor over there...

Like I said... I've taken my family through that learning center a dozen times and NEVER had a problem and many of my friends can tell the same story....

I'm just baffled...

whatever...

If you live on Eastern Long Island you might want to ski at Powder Ridge in Middlefield Connecticut. From Bridgeport the ski area is about a 1 hour drive away.

Powder Ridge has a 500' vertical drop with 14 trails, most of which are on the gentle side and good for learning how to ski.

Probably the best idea given in this whole thread; try to find a smaller out of the way mountain and avoid the crowds altogether...thanks loafer. Oh, and loafer could have gone ballistic about Hunter for good reason and didn't. Thanks buddy!
