Okay... we all know food on the mountain is expensive and very inconsitant.

It's been a great morning, you budgeted 10 bucks for some on-mountain food cause you are hungry and you don't want to get off the mountain cause the skiing is just sooooo sweet.

Where is the best on-mountain lunch spot in the northeast and why is it so great? For you purists lets define on-mountain as anyplace that has food and you can either ski or walk to it from the base area.

Chez Henri's in Sugarbush Village has been serving up fantastic food for over 40 years plus you can ski to it. 10 bucks would just about cover a light lunch with a nice glass of wine.

I like Bullwinkles at sugarloaf, it is a rustic log cabin type of restaurant that is located about mid-mountain on the west side of Sugarloaf.

It's not terribly expensive, and serves american style fast food. In the winter they offer a dinner special with snowcat service to the place.
That is something I have yet to do

bullwinkles at sugarloaf gets a second from me. cannon's summit cafe isn't too expensive and has fantastic views. less than $2 for a boat of homefries in the AM, a morning ritual for me :) other than that i can't recommend anything. it's all so damn expensive and not good quality for the money. brown bag it all the time.

lights were on tonight when i was hiking bald rock to catch the sunset. supposedly they are making the unloading of the tram easier and doing some expansion but i haven't heard any word this summer. the web page has been earily quiet.

Tired of skiing there, done it too many times. But, Schwende Hut (sp?) at Waterville Valley is top notch. Good food at decent prices and very comfortable by the food counter or downstairs in the living room feel area that even has slippers to use...

YES! I second Chez Henri.
Ski almost to the door, great character inside, and awesome food....Nothing like a cheee fondue to send you back on our way. The kids loved it too.

At the summit of Mt Orford in Quebec there's a really cool double-size yurt that services very upscale cafeteria food. Very French, very nice. It's a great building that looks semi-permanent - all fabric and exposed bracing.

But when you're out west at Breckenridge CO, do yourself a favor and grab a table at the Vista House up on Peak 8. Outstanding food, great drinks and the whole Rockies to look at. Killer place....

Well, I enjoy eating my bag lunch at the Glen House at Sugarbush's Mt. Ellen. Great views and they've done some renovations lately.

The Bear Den Lodge at Burke is very authentic and cool...the lodge is falling apart though. :(

I like Bullwinkles for a beer.
I like the deck at Camp3 at loon. My favorite is the outdoor BBQ they do and look up at the flume in the sun.
Charlie may agrue its the Summit by the Gondola at loon. Waterville's hut last year changed the menu to food that was much better. On Topic Loon had wraps at the Governors lodge for a little over 5 dollars just as good as a deli and very nicely priced. I just would prefer to be outside.

Anyway Camp3 is the best IMO.

You can buy a hot pocket and cook it in the microwave on top of Hunter :)
If you have a season pass you get a discount too..!

I had a nice meal at the top lodge at Bretton Woods a couple years back...

Also the resturant at the top of Kicking Horse is good too!!

there are grills at the top of Blue Sky Basin at Vail for public use. Y'know, in case you had an extra steak or hot dog and some charcoal in your backpack....

I can't remember the last time I ate anything substantial that I bought at the mountain, but I do remember for good, cheap re-loading food, the baked potato bar at Sunday River's North Peak was a great choice. And the spring time barbeque on the deck at Wildcat is great. Then again, spring time barbeque on the deck at any mountain is great.

Good point DMC. Loon lets pass holders pay 50$ and you get a card with 60$ worth of food. You use it like a prepaid credit card. They also have a resort charge that can be attached to your pass. That is an advantage and a disadvange in the bar. My kids have both. So my kids actually have the ability to buy anything on property. Its great if one is in a lesson or they are skiing with friends. I have been marketed.

Gotta second the brown bag theory, though...

....eating from my pack outside in a quiet, viewfull nook (unless it's extreme weather) is preferred. Plus the rest room is usually pristine compared to the lodge ones....

When I went to Loon with TB for the first time last year we ate lunch at Camp 3 on your recommendation and I thought it was great, thanks! :) I like places that have an outdoor BBQ going when its nice out. Our local mtn does that, you can smell the burgers cooking from pretty far away. Good marketing ploy I always thought...

The best lunch that I ever had on mountain outside of Europe, would have to be Christines at Blackcomb. We were served a gourmet lunch with a thick cotton tablecloth and napkins along with real silverware and china plates. The food and views were heavenly.

Best dinneron mountain:

Alpenglow Stube at Keystone :D :D The cheese fondue dinner is incredible.

I have not been to Keystone since 1993, but we did eat there several times before that and ski down the mountain at night.

When you are really full from dinner, temepratures in the single numbers are not pleasant.

I am thinking about going back there next January instead of going to Sugarloaf. It depends what kind of deal I can get.
