The contrarian strategy was again very successful today, this time at Black Mountain, NH. One to two feet of pow all over the place. Again one of my top 10 days of all time (I know this is sounding old already). New tracks and untracked trails everywhere. There is still plenty of untracked (though I did a pretty good job on the place :) There must have been a total of 20-30 people on the mountain all day. Greg is right, you can get untracked pow for days after a powder day. What a great place.

so... if you are on the edge and in the MWV area is on your radar, I argue there is high quality skiing there if you don't need leg-burning sustained vertical pitch. It was so awesome I was singing (and that takes a lot.) I think it may have even been better than Berk East, because Ski Patrol was generous in dropping almost every rope, and I'd say about half the trails had grooming. Got into the glades too, but that's a story for the morrow.

My legs are shot, my stomach is grinding and I'm falling asleep. I'll write it up in the AM. I have some great pics, better than BE. I wish I could go back tomorrow. Enjoy Saturday!

I used to hit that place a couple times a year after the really big storms that came on a friday or saturday. Dirt cheap skiing with almost no people, powderfest after a storm for days as long as the sun doesn't bake on its southern exposure. look near one of the glades to your left as your going up the double and you will see a barbed wire fence, crazy stuff. Your plan of hitting these mellow areas after snow is the best plan. Let everyone else fight for freshies at major resorts. Damn you can even sleep in if you want.

Amen to that. One of the best days I had last year was at a tiny place (Snow Ridge in Turin, NY) a day or two after the 7' Tug Hill snow storm. Two days later I skied at Shawnee Peak in Bridgton Maine while Sunday River was on almost complete wind hold (this was the day after the Valentine's Day storm.) That was a great day too. No crowds, 1/3 the price for same available (remember, wind holds) vert and snow, and everybody there has a smile on their face as opposed to a "why the *^&% am I frustrating myself @ this place" growl.

dig a hole!

Warp, You are dead-on right. Snowridge is on my radar - for just the right day, year, conditions....it reminds me of the bumps south of Buffalo that always get socked. More pow that the vertical can handle.

Now do dig a hole or add to the top, anything to add some elevation.

Again Black will be the place to be after all the snow refreezes. the mountain faces dead south, so even a little December sun can soften that hill up real nice. That and the lack of skidding tourons jammed onto a groomer that skis off at 10:30. Tix are like 30 or so bucks on holiday weeks right?

39 weekends/holidays, 29 weekdays. You're dead straight: Low volume = low impact = better experience, regardless your skill level.
