Believe it or not, I don't have much experience with my car getting stuck in snow. I've been either lucky or smart.

A buddy told me over some Christmas beers that he always keeps two rubber mats in his trunk that he slips under his tires if he's bogged or slipping on snow/ice. He says it works every time. I'm dubious. Anyone else do similar? Would it work?

(This is for a regular car not a 4WD).

Anything that can create some friction between the tires and the ground/ice will help.

Rubber mats, carpet, sand, gravel, snakes, politicians, anything gritty that you don't mind running over helps.

Rubber mats are a good idea. I always like to have a shovel in the car just in case I get stuck with a lot of snow built up under the car, keeping the drive wheels from making good contact with the ground. I have one similar to this (but with a slightly longer handle).

It takes a while to clear any significant amount of snow with it, but it doesn't take up much room in the car and can fit under the car to dig out compacted snow. It came in very handy last year when I got stuck trying to blast through a snow bank created by the plows.

Or these. Though I don't think I use them as a window scraper after I had them under the tires ...

Think we can scratch politicians...for their slippery-ness factor, but agree..anything that'll give you some traction.

Yeah, probably not much good for traction, but the running over part at least provides some entertainment.
