Ski Area: Burke

Conditions: Frozen Granular with some packed powder on the 23rd

Trip Report:

Tuesday 02/21:
I didn't realize that this week was school vacation week for pretty much everywhere except for NH so I was surprised to see how full the lot was at Mid-Burke when I arrived just before 9:00. Conditions were frozen granular all around and coverage was pretty good on all the groomed trails. At some point in the afternoon ski patrol open up a few natural snow trails but I wouldn’t ski any of them without rock skis after looking at the top of Wilderness which was pretty thin. I headed in for lunch at about 11:15 and I got the last table in the lodge. Lots of people were showing up to ski the afternoon and not just locals with passes. There was about a 1 or 2, sometimes 3 chair wait at the Sherburne Quad from about noon to 1:00 but other than that it was pretty much ski on despite the larger than normal midweek crowd. I noticed a lot of people just standing around at the bottom of the lift often blocking the way to the chair. The day started with light flurries but gradually intensified to light snow throughout the day but no accumulation.

Thursday 02/23:
Not quite as many people as on Tuesday but still more then I’m used to midweek, but the crowd thinned out a good deal around noon. The mountain had gotten 4-5” of new snow over the past day or two which made for some pretty good conditions but still not quite enough for me to venture off the groomed so I spent my day ripping SL turns. It’s been nice this week to be able to ski Warren’s without the ruts left from the BMA kids training. Conditions are slowly getting better as it has snowed lightly up here everyday this week. Every inch counts but we are in need of a big dumping to really help get more terrain open.

Great preview of my couple days up there this week....this has not been a typical winter at all. Really bummed by that. This has not been a good season to ski at Burke.

Made my first trip to Burke of the season today. What a pleasure to ride to Mid-Burke in 4 minutes. There was about 4" of fresh snow, but I was certainly disappointed to see how few trails they managed to open this year. I love the glades at Burke, but only Sasqwatch was open (and a lot of fun). It was windy and a lot of the snow was drifting in places and left lotsa ice.

I know that they will continue to upgrade their snowmaking system as the $$ from Ginn flow in, which should enable them to get through years like this in better shape. The base lodge renovation came out really nicely; we had drinks/pub food upstairs and the Tamarack Grill looks great. They have a major issue with insufficient seating in the base lodge; they'll need to address that as Burke becomes more popular as I think that the seating issues will be a major source of frustration.

While the lower HSQ is great, clearly a HSQ to the top is even more sorely needed; I look forward to that at next year's trip.

People were real friendly. The locals I spoke too don't have too much info on the timeline or specifics of Ginn's plan. It sounds like the Mid Burke lodge will be dismantled, and partially moved toward the base of the Willoughby Quad to allow for the hotel construction.
