Ski Resort: Burke Mountain

Date: December 10, 2007

Conditions: Chowder, MG, with about 2-3 inches of freshies on top.

Weather: Snow showers giving way to blue skies.

2007-2008 Report # : 9

Trip Report: Day Three of Burke’s season and my third consecutive day of skiing. The plan was a few morning runs before handling other business this afternoon. Got to the mountain at 9:10 or so and was literally the 10th car in the lot. Booted up in an eerily quiet MidBurke and headed to the Quad.

They had snowguns going on Lower Fox’s and Lower Willoughby. The mountain was covered with about 2-3 inches of freshies from the night before.

The game plan was to hit some of the wood runs as well as some of the ungroomed hits and throw in some good groomers in between. My legs were a bit tired, but ready to roll.

First run was down Upper Bear Den (first tracks) to an amazing Upper Willoughby to Lower Warren’s. Freshies…amazing. Got my own little fresh patch of snow and my own section on Lower Warren’s. So good I had to repeat, only throwing in Lower Bear Den. Wow. Hero turns and fresh pow. Amazing.

Since I had warmed up, I headed to Sasqwatch-Wilderness-Powderhorn-Y-Knot. Great run. Wilderness has been consistently good…not sketchy at all. A favorite of mine I will say. Y-Knot held some DEEP snow and caught me a bit off guard…but nice turns and nice to get back in the woods.

After a brief delayering, I headed back out to hit Willoughby/Lower Bear Den/Lower Warren’s Way for some more great turns. Then it was a spin down East Bowl…amazing. Loving the new pow and the chowder underneath and loved getting third tracks on it today.

My legs wanted another mild run, so I did Carriage Road all the way to Deer Run, screamed down Big Dipper and then made a hard left onto Boarderline. It was about 10:30 and I had first tracks for most of that trail. Love it. A nice stash.

So now I was ready for my daily Ledge’s run. I did Shoot to Upper Fox’s and then cut over to the Meadows. Be very careful on the Meadows…it is quite thin now and a bit sketchy. The headwall skied well though…I took my line on skier’s right and danced down the fall line to Lower Bear Den.

My legs were getting tired….so I needed another easy run. So I rested and then did another run down Willoughby. I cut onto The Gap and found that it was bony at best…there is also an open water bar in the middle complete with water, so be careful.

By now I was getting pretty tired and time was running out. I decided to hit Doug’s Drop since it had been a couple days. I took Upper Fox’s to Deer Run, and then ducked onto Doug’s by the Poma. I almost got stuck in the deep snow…which had drifted to almost my pole’s depth  The bumps were great…just be careful of the few rocks that are surfacing. As I headed down I spotted a nice stash and went to investigate. Curiosity did not kill this cat. Five tracks and waist deep pow. 110 cm skis are great for the trees, but not waist deep snow   I was having a BLAST. Jumped back onto McHarg’s and then into Little Chief. Tracked out, but skied very NICELY. I love getting back into the woods…

So now it was 12:25 and I had planned to go…but I had the urge for ONE more run. So I gave in.

Powderhorn to Dipper Doodle was the call. Upper Powderhorn lived up to its name, but the section below the Toll Road elbow is sketchy…beware. Dipper Doodle was largely untraveled and deep. Nice change.

A nice morning. It was nice chatting with DB on the lift ride about St. Jay Trucking and DRM. Will be back tomorrow for more spins…probably Wilderness and East Bowl are in the mix as well as Doug’s. We’ll see how my legs feel
