2007-2008 Report # : 8

Trip Report: Second Day of my little Burke tour and it was a cold one. I got to the mountain at about 8:50 and landed the spot normally reserved for the original trailboss…at least one Trailboss got it.

The game plan was to hit the groomers today after a great day of ripping pow. I got to the Quad at 9:05 with NO line at all. First two runs were down a wonderfully groomed Willougby. Skied like butter. Watching the sunrise was amazing. The section above Darling Point was still a bit sketchy, but the rest of the Willoughby-Bear Den run was mint. On my first spin down Lower Fox’s, I skied under MK and PM, two fellow Dawn Patrollers. I jumped over to Warren’s on the second run and found it to be mini death cookies…

Third run was a nice cruise down Deer Run to Big Dipper. I ran into PM and MK and chatted about the wonderful conditions. They were a bit lost because the original trailboss, the leader of the Dawn Patrol, was absent this morning. Word has it that it was a bit too cold for his liking  Well, at least one Trailboss was at the mountain.

We ripped turns down Dipper to the Lodge for a warm up. PM went to check on her new dog and MK and I warmed our toes. It was one of those mornings where you can feel the cold air leaking in through the zippers in your coat.

After a break, we headed back out for another spin down Upper Willoughby. By now a few more folks were out, but still plenty of snow and plenty of room. We took in the sun shining on the ‘Gap and on Jay Peak. Very nice.

At this point, PM was done and headed back to MidBurke. MK and I hit Willoughby for one more spin…very nice. I cut onto Lower Fox’s for some crud and he headed back to MidBurke.

By now it was about 10:30, so I decided to take one more spin on Willoughby and then took a great run down Wilderness-Powderhorn-Boarderline for some crud. Wow. Wilderness was amazing.

Before lunch, I headed to the bottom to take a few spins. Word has it the Lower Mountain will be closed this week…nobody is sure why. Probably not enough skiers and riders.

After a nice lunch, I busted out the short boards and decided to go big. First run was down Upper Bear Den to Ledges for some crud. Wow. Still good. I hit the left side of the knoll and found deep crud. Then, while my legs were warm, I did my first glade run of the 2007-2008 season, which was Sasqwatch to Wilderness, and then down to Mountain Marsh and Marshland. The glades were stellar! Is this December? Had to keep the karma going. Next was East Bowl…wow. I got stuck on one part. The snow from the westside that got blown away landed here. Great bumps and crud. Amazing.

So I stopped in the Lodge for a 2pm warm up and then headed back out. I had decided that I would to a Carriage Road/Upper Doug’s spin before East Bowl. And then the power went out, closing the Quad for most of the afternoon. I was offloaded at the top and did a spin down Carriage Road/Doug’s/Powderhorn/Lew’s Leap. Soft bumps and plenty of cover.

So at 2:30 I considered calling it a day. But I could see that the Lower HSQ was spinning and my legs needed a cool down  Off to the bottom. The first run one of the trail cleaning crew talked me into trying out the Enchanted Forest. Let’s say I found some untracked snow and boy did I need my arm twisted to go in for seconds and thirds. OK, the wooden animal caricatures on the trees are different, but heck, it was tree skiing and I was having fun. I spent the rest of the hour giving the boards a work out on Dashney, Bunker Hill, and Binney Lane. I got in seven solid runs in that hour…more than the two or three I had planned.

I left at 3:30. I will sleep well tonight. The game plan is more turns tomorrow…short board style in the woods and bump runs.
