Burlington area rentals? Bolton comments?

Paging northern VT locals -- I'm looking for a February (presidents' week) vacation rental for a large family group. Me, non-skiing wife, and 3 to 5 teenage kids. Ideal location would be Burlington and we'd take daytrips out but very slim pickings in town (earlier post on same subject was here (http://forums.epicski.com/showthread.php?t=42743).

Any suggestions? I'm thinking now it may be best to rent someplace at Bolton Valley - thinking less crowds for the vacation week; easiest access to Burlington for nonskiers and going into town for dinner and poking around; one of the teens is what you'd call an "athletic beginner" who could probably use some lessons, and my guess is that's a better bet than the bigger places in a vacation week; I'd like to check out the backcountry; and it looks centrally located for trips to Sugarbush, MRG and Stowe.

I don't know much about Bolton other than how close it is to Stowe, etc., and generally it should be less crowded in a vacation week. But the response on AZ challenge and comments seem promising. The spread seems smaller at 165 acres than others in the area but I'd rather have 165 open acres than 500 crowded -- and 1700 vert is fine by me, especially if it's reasonably sustained or interesting trails. Any comments on skiing and/or staying at Bolton? If we rent there, any developments to avoid or seek out? Any comments on the ski school for our relative newbie?

Still open to Burlington rentals if anyone has a good suggestion in town or reasonably near by. Kids could share rooms or a sleeping loft and will be reasonably well behaved.

Thanks.

You're right about the lack of crowds at Bolton. Have you checked with the resort? They have a lot of properties there....

I'd avoid Stowe and the MRV (sorry noski) for condo rentals that week...we're talking big $$$.

If you are open to hotels, the Hawthorne Suites in South Burlington is really nice. My boss and her family stayed there for a week or so while they had some work done on their house. You are about 1/2 hour to Bolton, an hour to Stowe, 'Bush, or MRG.
It's on the CCTA bus line so the non-sking folk can head downtown easily if there is not access to another car. University Mall is within walking distance.

grrr..... (thanks for considering my sensitivity, though TB!) BUT, being the optimist I am- here is something maybe you didn't know. During Christmas and President's weeks, there is a $2 each way bus that goes from Barre/Montpelier to MRG and/or SB every day. It travels on weekends only all season otherwise. That's a good deal.
Unfortunately, there is not much for condo rentals in that area. But maybe using "Craigs List" you can find a family who would rent their house while they go to FL during school vacation.

Thanks folks.

Is that school vacation week in VT as well? (I'm looking 2/17 - 2/24/06.)

How's the skiing at Bolton (other than uncrowded)?

Trailboss you're dead right about the condo pricing that week at Stowe, Sugarbush, etc. Since we want to "ski around" anyway, I'd hate to spend that kind of money.

VT School vacation week is almost always the week following Presidents Week. I think it starts on or about the 25th this year. Most Vermonters (that I know) head to Florida that week, not the slopes!!

Skiing at Bolton ain't too shabby and they have night skiing too. I might suggest having some good snow tires because it is quite the climb to get to the ski area.
