Resort or Ski Area: Camelback

Conditions: Loose Granular

Trip Report: Had the chance to take my (snowboarder) son, Matt, to Camelback, while he is home from college. A check of their web cam before leaving showed them to be fairly busy, which is expected for this week.

When we arrived, the entire hill was shrouded in fog. Matt picked up his rental gear while I booted up. We proceeded to get in a somewhat long line for the Sullivan Express at approximately 4:20pm and headed to the top.

Conditions were really quite good, considering the past weather and the amount of people on the slope during the day. The surface was loose granular, with edgeable hardpack underneath. The sides of the trails were plenty soft, as that was where most of the snow had ended up, of course.

As Matt probably only has 10 days snowboarding experience total, we started off on CBK's greens and double greens (CBK's trail rating goes like this: Beginner, Green, Double-Green, Blue, Double-Blue, Black, plus one Double-Black) on the west side.

It was fairly crowed so we headed over to the east side where there was more room. After more runs we decided to go into the lodge to hydrate. After this short break we went back out to find the fog completely lifted and the lines for the lifts gone.

It was apparent that Matt was getting his snowboard legs back, so we tried an easy blue square. No problem. We went back up and tried a slightly harder blue and again, no problem. Cool.

Next trip up he was willing to try Big Pocono Run, a double-blue square. This run is probably as steep as Hellgate at Hunter, but just for a much shorter distance. Camelback is much like Belleayre in this regard.

Matt's first run was tentative, so I figured we found his limit. But when we met at the lift he said he wanted to run it again. Cool. His second (and successive) runs were much better.

We wrapped up the night with another run on King Tut, a single blue square trail. On the way home we stopped at a Red Robin for some onion rings and burgers.

This trip was a definite highlight of Christmas 2007.
