I also don't think that this practice really is theft of services, either. It's rather like paying for a dinner but if you have some leftovers, the restaurant shouldn't care what you do with the "doggy bag". Ski area gets my money for a full day's lifts. If I leave early, I fell it's perfectly OK to sell this time to somebody else, especially if the mountain really charges huge money for the ticket, i.e Stowe.

I'd say it's more like inviting someone to come in to an "All You Can Eat" buffet-style restaurant and taking over your table, if you insist on a restaurant metaphor. It is theft of services, at least under Vermont state law, and presumably in other states as well.

Vermont Theft of Services statute; my presumption is that removing a non-transferable lift ticket from one person and attaching it to another would qualify as "deception...to avoid payment."

Back in the day of a struggling student/ski addict, I have to say...been there, done that and personally, I don't find it something that anyone should get offended over. If you don't like the practice, don't do it, to each his own...

I'll also make the hypothesis: that as far as industry totals go....skiing probably has a relatively small amount on a percentage basis of stolen services compared to other industries that cater to the public, such as retail stores, etc.

I'll just say this.
How many people who take offense to this "stealing of services" have mp3s? Were they all purchased on itunes?

me too. attended catleton state outside of rutland in the early 90's. only way we got to ski was clipping tickets in the k parking lot. that and wednesday was $17 at okemo with a student id.

Pico offered a student seasons pass for $250 when i was at Green Mtn College. i did uphold the law and purchased that but it was gone by the time i enrolled at castleton a couple years later.

Seriously, this holier than thou attitude about clipping tickets is BS. Are you really that offended? Warren MIller got his start doing this, and everyone loves him.

I clip tickets in the parking lot and clip my nails on the chair...

I'm heavily offensive.

I knew a guy in college that used to steal tips off the bar. I used to think it was kind of scumy but now I realize it's ok. I'd like to thank all of you for setting me straight.

nice retort. dont get me wrong, i'm not saying i would do it now nor am i saying its right. But i would be pretty damn hypocritcal to condemn someone for doing it.

Unfortunately it is true... get caught in ticket fraud = expect the blue light/handcuff experience, especially this time of year.

If you have vouchers that are specific to your name, unload them somewhere other than IN the parking lot WHERE YOU CAN BE SEEN.

You think we send paid employees out to the parking lots just to park cars?

ROFLMAO.

i'm glad you're ROFLYAO. not sure why though. I'm simply saying i dont care one way or another. thats MY opinion. or are we just all supposed to think the same here? I havent clipped a ticket since i was 20 years old. hmm thats about 16 years. I think the statute of limitations has long since passed on my horrible felony. i wouldnt do it now cause i have no reason to. i'm not rich but i can afford my skiing. so i pay. clip a ticket, i dont care, get pissed cause someone asks you, still dont care. its all about individual opinion. you want to tell me its akin to ripping off a bartenders tips? have at it. still doesnt change my opinion.

Nor mine. It's also not really akin to stealing tips from a bartender off a bar. It's more like finishing off someone's beer that's already been paid for after they've walked out of the bar.

Just to move the discussion in a slightly different direction, I'd say that ski areas whose tickets are are really expensive, could actually capture a bit more business and limit the lift ticket resale/gifting by issuing variable time block tickets.

I'd absolutely love an idea of a half day morning ticket or a block of 3 hours that can be used any time. If offered at a reasonable price, I'm sure that such a ticket would be interest to many, especially day trippers.

As the prices of walk up tickets cocntinue to rise, I'm sure that such alternative pricing startegies will become more attractive to both the mountain and the sliding clientelle.
