Devastating. That is all I can say. All of the natural snow is almost all gone. Low glades are completely gone. All trails had a dusting covering very hard pack and ice. What a great start they had too. Profile aka Cannonball is seeing the guns finally. Skylight is still bare at the top and no sign a snowmaking. There are even trails closed that were the first to open like Parkway.

They really need to invest in new guns too.

When did they rename Profile to Cannonball? That is new....

IMHO whoever has been naming trails there the last few years needs to be dragged out into the street and shot. Global Warming Glade? Go Green Glade? Please tell me that they are going to keep the original Mittersill names on those trails and not anything corny like "$2.3 million baby" or "Stimulus."

Cannon got some new guns in past years. They are fan guns but they don't seem to move them around much, just the base area.

The rename to Cannonball is not new this season. It might have been last season but no earlier than two seasons ago. Its a shame really, the name of Profile was about the only thing good about that trail. The Old Man falls down and all of a sudden having the trail name match the chairlift name is important. I dunno. Its always going to be Profile to me.

The trail naming at Cannon is unfortunate. This kind of goes hand in hand with the recent threads on naming short connectors and headwalls just to add trail count and increase open percentage. The 'possessive' naming theme is the pits. It all started with Mickey's Margin and David's Detour, if I remember correctly (technically with Polly's Folly but that has been named as such a heck of a lot longer than the recent trail bumping). And it didn't take long for Tramline to become "DJ's". Thankfully, the Tuckerbrook area was well named.

As far as Mittersill is concerned, I hope that they retail the old Mittersill names. But bear in mind Mittersill trails were named before the days of trail count inflation so only the main routes were named. Cannon could easily add 30 trails if they wanted to.

The fan guns are only used near the Peabody base. I am talking about the guns used on trails. They are all very old and take a lot of energy and not very efficient.

Sounds like it would have been better use of state money to update their snow making equipment instead of building a lift at Mittersill?

Kidding aside, even Sunday River, one of the kings of snow making in New England, uses those old school tripod guns on many of their trails. They are also standard part of most mountain's snow making arsenal. Even the biggest resorts with the most up to date snow making systems don't have efficient fan guns on even the majority of trails. They seem to be primarily used for the main routes that need to get opened the soonest or that take the most traffic and need constant refresh.

Also keep in mind that they use certain types of snowguns in certain weather conditions and when they desire to make a certain kind of snow. The tripod guns are used most often for base building times when they want wetter, denser snow.

I know the tripods are still STD at most places. They put out a lot of snow in the right conditions. I am talking about the old tech guns you see along Zoomer and Profile which were running. They were not putting out a lot of snow.

That tends to be tied with the installation cost, as many of these resorts spent millions to install air-water over the past decades. Installing fan guns would require running power up each of the trails. Many mid-sized areas are trending toward fan guns now, but the larger areas not quite as much (though you do have large areas like Mt. Snow rolling out wide fan gun usage).

For the price of the new chairlift that has operated 1 day this season, Cannon could have installed over 100 brand new SMI Polecat fan guns. In comparison, Peak Resorts added 101 SMI fan guns at Mt. Snow when they took it over in 2007.

They laid down a bunch of snow regardless of gun type on Zoomer (Taken 12/17)

So true, but not much wind on Saturday. Do you know the sorry behind why Profile is straight?

Probably because of the double T-bars that used to run up the mountain there. Though the T-bars were sheltered before the trail went in. They could have left the T-bar line and snaked the trail though. It was built in the days of the great White Hype, so those were the days of bigger and wider.

Partially correct. Original layout for the trail by designers called for a winding trail when the chair went. But the state thought the knew better and put in a straight trail basically bulldozing it.
