Conditions: Packed Powder, BUSY
Trip Report:
Why did I wait over twenty years to ski Cannon again? Well, I know the reason, it's always been rather inconvenient to get to from where I've been living in Maine or Vermont. Now that I am living in NH, I hope to make frequent visits.
Had an awesome day skiing with Johnskismore, his girlfriend as well as my old boss and his son from Cape Cod who I hadn't seen in at least five years. Sorry, no pics, left the camera in the car as I figured I'd be too busy skiing to bother. Skied from 9 until 2:30 with a quick pit stop in the middle. While it was very busy because of the twofer deal they had for the Super Bowl, lines weren't too bad, though we did take the singles line several times.
Skied all over the mountain. Started up top with a run down Vista Way, which I was expecting to just be a cruiser....nope, SWEET soft bumps with only a hint of ice in some of the troughs. Did most of the runs off the top except for Profile. I think profile they should just seed bumps on. They had let it bump up, but from the chair, they seemed pretty spread out and random from all the novice skiers on it. Hardscrabble was boney, but what a great trail, reminds me a lot of Chin Clip at Stowe.
After the top we went over and did a few runs off the Zoomer lift, which again had great snow. It was nice to get on some terrain with legitimate pitch. I wonder why they cut the trails over there so wide though? Seems like they'd be better and hold snow more if they were half the width or less. Took the Tram from there back up to the top. As I kind of expected, some laid a huge beef on the Tram causing the majority of the crowd to grumble . Tramline looked like a SICK trail, but I can't imagine the amount of snow it would take to open. There was one set of tracks down in, but with all those boulders, I can see why it's never open. They really should try and clear out the small rocks and just leave the larger ledges and boulders, so it could open.
Then the highlight of the day. John took me to a couple of GREAT off the map glades. The first one was completely tracked out, but still a lot of fun. The second one, we had to do a lot of bush wacking on a traverse to get to it, but we were rewarded. It certainly had been skied since the storm, but probably on two or three times that day. It appeared that the wind had blown all of the snow caught up in the evergreen branches above and pockets had filled in nicely with four to eight inches of powder. It was awesome. Great pitch, easily the best tree skiing I have done this season. I had no idea that Cannon had such great off map glades outside of Mittersill.
Finished the day with a run over at Mittersill. It was BUSY out there. I had been looking forward to skiing over there forever and even though it wasn't a powder day, the experience didn't disappoint. Truly phenomenal ski experience over there and I really am now hoping for no expansion over there. The only thing I would've done differently today would have been to ski Mittersill earlier in the day. I was completely spent by the time I skied it and was downright gaperific making my way down.
Can't wait to get back up to Cannon again. Great meeting you John! Sorry we missed you Dave Howland and Puck it. Should've exchanged cell phone numbers, my bad for not facilitating that. Hope you guys had as good of a day as we did.
