Resort or Ski Area: Cannon Mountain

Conditions: Packed Powder, BUSY

Trip Report:

Why did I wait over twenty years to ski Cannon again? Well, I know the reason, it's always been rather inconvenient to get to from where I've been living in Maine or Vermont. Now that I am living in NH, I hope to make frequent visits.

Had an awesome day skiing with Johnskismore, his girlfriend as well as my old boss and his son from Cape Cod who I hadn't seen in at least five years. Sorry, no pics, left the camera in the car as I figured I'd be too busy skiing to bother. Skied from 9 until 2:30 with a quick pit stop in the middle. While it was very busy because of the twofer deal they had for the Super Bowl, lines weren't too bad, though we did take the singles line several times.

Skied all over the mountain. Started up top with a run down Vista Way, which I was expecting to just be a cruiser....nope, SWEET soft bumps with only a hint of ice in some of the troughs. Did most of the runs off the top except for Profile. I think profile they should just seed bumps on. They had let it bump up, but from the chair, they seemed pretty spread out and random from all the novice skiers on it. Hardscrabble was boney, but what a great trail, reminds me a lot of Chin Clip at Stowe.

After the top we went over and did a few runs off the Zoomer lift, which again had great snow. It was nice to get on some terrain with legitimate pitch. I wonder why they cut the trails over there so wide though? Seems like they'd be better and hold snow more if they were half the width or less. Took the Tram from there back up to the top. As I kind of expected, some laid a huge beef on the Tram causing the majority of the crowd to grumble . Tramline looked like a SICK trail, but I can't imagine the amount of snow it would take to open. There was one set of tracks down in, but with all those boulders, I can see why it's never open. They really should try and clear out the small rocks and just leave the larger ledges and boulders, so it could open.

Then the highlight of the day. John took me to a couple of GREAT off the map glades. The first one was completely tracked out, but still a lot of fun. The second one, we had to do a lot of bush wacking on a traverse to get to it, but we were rewarded. It certainly had been skied since the storm, but probably on two or three times that day. It appeared that the wind had blown all of the snow caught up in the evergreen branches above and pockets had filled in nicely with four to eight inches of powder. It was awesome. Great pitch, easily the best tree skiing I have done this season. I had no idea that Cannon had such great off map glades outside of Mittersill.

Finished the day with a run over at Mittersill. It was BUSY out there. I had been looking forward to skiing over there forever and even though it wasn't a powder day, the experience didn't disappoint. Truly phenomenal ski experience over there and I really am now hoping for no expansion over there. The only thing I would've done differently today would have been to ski Mittersill earlier in the day. I was completely spent by the time I skied it and was downright gaperific making my way down.

Can't wait to get back up to Cannon again. Great meeting you John! Sorry we missed you Dave Howland and Puck it. Should've exchanged cell phone numbers, my bad for not facilitating that. Hope you guys had as good of a day as we did.

It has been so long since you skied Cannon that you apparently have not gotten the lay of the land right in regards to where you were. There are no good glades outside of Mittersill at Cannon. Might as well head down Taft to the Double and go fish. That is all there is to it.

Tramline can open with less snow than you might think. There is a skiable path that is relatively boulder free... or at least not the worst of the rocks on skier's right of the trail. I don't think I have ever skied that trail during which I could venture any where edge to edge without hitting rocks so the left side is generally not good even when it is open. Definitely would be nice if they blasted out some of the biggest offenders. Love the technicality of the cliffs around tower 1 so those are keepers.

Keep me posted if you plan to hit Cannon after some fresh snow. Would be cool to meet up with you for some turns.

Yeah, that's where the tracks were, skiers right. Like I said, just some of the small rocks out of there and it could open I'm sure much more often. I agree with you, I wouldn't want to see the cliff area around Tower 1 altered, looks like a ton of fun.

Would be great to ski with you some time. You can show me the best lines to take down the groomers as you're right, I was exagerating, no good tree skiing at Cannon. ;)

Agreed a great day. I am a passholder but i dragged my mid 60's father up there and he couldnt stop singing the praises. As a reference for how long it had been, he asked me when they replaced the t-bars after we got off the tram.

where its snowing
Was pretty busy... the competition on Garys probably brought a lot of fams up, aside from the half-price superbowl pricing.... Still a great day though -- Gave a good friend the full tour, including taft's left side... Looking forward to coming back on a Tues/Thurs after a dump....

great day. I didn't think it was all that crowded, but that must be me being used to loon/waterville crowds. snow was great, a little scrapy towards the end of the day. I've got a bunch of helmet cam video I'm working with right now. Woods off of Cannonball were awesome.

That is not skiable. Trees are too close. Lots of snow though. You should tried the trees between Profile and Skylight. Enter from Skylight. Also, off of Vista Way, you can duck into some scrub spruce for some decent turns before you hit the cliff.

I'm not sure I'd want to get into where you were. John and I did a bit of bush wacking on a traverse, but were rewarded with a couple hundred vert of open lines, that was very sweet. Not the virgin snow you got, but more 'productive' I guess would be what I'd say.

but....if you enjoyed what you were going after there, bravo. that's all that matters

i would uh...tend to disagree with you there. I skied it, ergo, it would seem to me that it's skiable.

If you enjoyed it fine, You were not linking any turns, which is my definition of skiing. No offense intended. I think you would have had more fun linking some turns on the other side.

Based on that video, I would not say you "skied" it but rather found a way through it. And this coming from an ultimate bush whacker for tree skiing. As Puck It noted... no linked turns... then you just traversed a downhill line.
