That show's they're doing something right. I think in this economy, folks are looking to maximize the value of their recreation(s). Cutting back in some ares but buying a season ticket might allow for additional recreation days this winter.

Good news nonetheless. Hope this becomes a trend.

Quick, let's privatize the thing.

Just kidding.

That is good news. A sign of approval for the new management.

...waaaaaiiiiit a minute:

Cannon Mountain has 72 trails, 9 lifts, and terrain for all ability levels. Cannon has the longest vertical drop and the highest lift-served terrain in New Hampshire, and the state's only aerial tramway.

72 trails? Since when?

Are they doing well for the same reason McDonald's and Walmart are doing well in this economy?

They added a few glades this year... five or six I think? Plus they have cut up a few trails in recent years such us Mid Hard headwall. I think they were in the mid-40s before the Tuckerbrook expansion but they put about a dozen glades on the map since then in addition to naming a few connector trails and all the Tuckerbrook stuff. Cannon certainly doesn't ski like it has 72 trails.

I think a big reason for Cannon having good season pass sales is because they had their second snowiest year last year. Having a GM that can get the snow machines blowing early and blowing often was a big help. It was ridiculous how late the snow stayed in last Spring for turn earning... but that was only on the snowmaking trails even given the big natural snows. Being a value option in a tough one of New England's non-resort economy options doesn't hurt either.

Im willing to bet that with decent snow, and improved snowmaking early season, the Loon crowd realized its just as far to Cannon (by the time you drive through Lincoln to the actual resort, park across the river, etc) played a large role. That and the fact that Cannon actually kicks ass, especially tram laps down tramline or Kinsman. Good vibe, not the lift line and condo shitshow that is loon, and you dont have to deal with N. Conway traffic and crappy terrain.

I doubt Cannon is drawing from Loon's clientele. Loon is by far the better mountain for those looking for slope side, condos, parks, amenities, resort needs, intensive guest services, etc. Two very different mountains and when it comes to season passes, I really don't see motivation for Loon skiers to switch mountains... especially considering Loon got that same good snow fall. Loon is no Cannon when it comes to terrain, but it ain't no slouch either. Everything off the Flume Double is mint and amazingly enough, they have decent glades that are probably skiable more often than Cannon's steeper offerings.

Oh come on, you're only allowed to talk about back country

Cannon has a better bar than Loon.

I wasn't suggesting that the jump in numbers at Cannon was all from Loon, but from clients and customers I work with, there are about twenty I can think of that went the Cannon pass route and not Loon this season. Which most of these people, let's just say, with some of your descriptions listed above, are Loon material and not Cannon. Reasons for the switch is the price, for they are really restricting their budget this season.

I leff Loon cause it increased price structure.(value)

I decided to drive further and pay more to get more.

Now that you can get Loon , Sugarloaf and Sunday River on the same pass, even though its more than the loon pass was..... the value exists.

I 'll come back and ski Loon some again.

Cannon is what we use to call a skiers mountain. The early and late season buff's are not going to be happy at cannon, but it has great terrain. I considered Cannon casue it was much less money before I went to Maine.

Saving money and skiing Cannon is a win, win for many

I was at the homecoming day last Saturday at Cannon and JD spoke to us for 20 minutes about the new glades and other new trail names. We were all scratching our heads since last year there were 60 trails and only 6 new ones were cut.We all thought he went overboard in telling us what a great they did last year, over and over.A record snow year of 240+ inches had a lot more to do with that in my opinion.Anyway,I didn't hear him mention the big increase in pass sales,a little surprizing given all the back patting going on.He talked about the Mittersill expansion saying the land swap is approved but they are waiting for the discussion period to end and will hopefully have everything finalized sometime this season. If they do he said they will do some limited grooming this year.A lift looked like it might be 3-4 years away and he said they are only approved for what was already there in the past.It would be a double chair and it has to be right where the old one was.Snowmaking will follow also.Stay tuned.
