Date(s) Skied: 1-3-2008
Resort or Ski Area: Cannon mountain
Conditions: packed powder, FG, towards the end of the day ice
Trip Report: What can I say I have skied mostly big resorts since moving to NH and i realized it was time to check out Cannon. My college id discount really sealed the deal with a 46 dollar ski pass that I couldn't beat anywhere. i took the "D" lift from the base lodge and spoke with fellow passengers to get a good idea of a good moderate trail to start things off. They mentioned to check out ravine which I would do. Immediately I realized what I was in for. I honestly hadn't experienced terrain like this with narrow chutes and aggressive skiers making nice turns everywhere. I guess you could call me a hayseed in Manhattan
I ended up taking the turnpike which had a lot of nice packed powder on it and cruised to the bottom. I went up the D lift numerous times and took the many different intermediate trails and slowly got a good feeling of the mountain. I went over to the Zoomer lift after an hour or 2 and started checking out the trails on that side of the mountain. I found rocket to be a nice speedy trail which had some decent cover on it. Took that a time or two and then headed over to banshee and Jasper's Hideaway. Both trails were a lot of fun to ski and I made some nice turns in the mostly packed powder with some FG in the mix. Around 12:45 I took a break because I was freezing and proceeded to the pub and had a few Cannon IPA's which strangely immediately thawed me out
I needed the break and some grub so I relaxed in the warmness for 45 minutes or so and had some lunch. The conditions had slowly deteriorated since I had arrived at the mountain and I was getting a little bummed and cold. The snow wasn't bad until about half day and things pretty much iced up and it got tough.
I had wanted to check out the summit but the man made snow storm over the summit lift, and the harsh winds/temperature had deterred me until after lunch. I dressed up and got my skis together and headed for the summit. Profile was getting tons of snow dumped onto it via the snow guns. There had to be a foot of powder at least on the trail and the guns had been going all day. When i got to the top I headed for Upper ravine which reminded me of a trail "upper wraparound" that I had skied in NY(I think) a long time ago. This trail turned out to be the gem of the day. It had lots of good snow on it and making the narrow turns was not hard. The scenery was amazing I could see the Franconia Ridge which I had hiked this past summer so that was cool. I skied this trail from top to bottom a few times and then just skied it to the summit lift a few more times. Eventually it was ice and getting crowded which I blame the sun for. It was nice towards the second half of the day with the sun but it was still cold and windy. I left the summit area and skied the banshee followed by middle bypass and Paulie's extension which was flat out treacherous in spots. 6 people bit the dust almost in a row on Paulie's extension and the place just became icy all around. I called it a day around 3:15 having felt pretty accomplished and not wanting to push my luck. All in all id say with another storm or two Cannon would be amazing(pretty much the story I'm hearing for any NH resort these days) I will certainly check it out again soon and look forward to making some cheap turns in the future.
Sorry for the novel lol.
