Who do you use? I'll tell you who not to use. Travelers. I just switched to them and had to go through absolute hell verifying the policy AFTER I signed off and gave them the opening $200 deposit. This was back on March 10th.

I switched to them from AIG as they were offering the same policy for $400 cheaper a year. It was the best deal out there and seemed like a no brainer.

AFTER I sign off, I get a call to verify the policy. Going back five years, I've lived in Maine (2yrs), VT (1.5years), MD (1 year), WV (1 year). Mind you I don't keep record of my old drivers licence numbers when I switch state. I imagine most people don't as you turn in old licenses when getting new ones. They make ME do the research and find out all my old numbers claiming its State of ME policy. I had to PAY for the information from two of the other states. Mind you, I was already insured by another company in the state of Maine and didn't have to go through this garbage. I've talked to others who didn't either.

Now, I own the car, but the gf is the primary driver. I put her on the policy as the primary driver, they switch the policy over to her as the owner!!! So, then I end up having to mail a copy of my title into them to prove that THEY made a mistake and I indeed do own the vehicle.

Mind you all the while they're threatening me with cancelling the policy should I not get the information they need in a timely manner. I swear to god, I was this () close to sending them some pubic hair and asking them if they wanted to verify my DNA.

Apparently I'm all set now, but I wouldn't be surprised if they call again asking for something else. In 16 years of driving and 14 years of owning cars I've never gone through such bullchit

Moral of the story? If you're shopping for car insurance DO NOT GO WITH TRAVELERS

I use Geico, they're the least expensive for my area. Customer service is great. I look at $ 4 grand a year for 2 cars.

Did you offer to give the deceased a deal on a new Tombstone?

I pay $1200/yr - 2 drivers, 1 car - 2007 Sonata.

We used to have MetLife. All the local offices closed though and they were a pain to deal with over the phone. (Plus when we had them for homeowners, they doubled our rates one month after we bought our house... it wasn't anything special either.)

So then we went with an independent agent who shopped around for prices and found Progressive to be cheaper with better coverage.

We pay about $1534/yr for a 1998 Blazer (that has full coverage), 2001 Passat wagon, and a 1978 Cherokee with 2 drivers.

I'd recommend USAA, but my guess is that anyone who is eligible to get insurance through them already has it...

I'm pretty sure that I don't pay the cheapest rates, but my claims experience over the past 20+ years has been good.

Do you and your girlfriend share a car? Actually no damage was done to the tombstone but $2100 in damage was done to my Subaru..it was a small monument that I didn't see in my side or rearview mirrors..

We use State Farm too and it's around $1300/year for a 2007 CRV and a 2005 Tacoma. Very happy with them and will/do highly recommend.

You are 100% correct. I have extensive coverage which costs considerably more than the minimum required by the state. The minimums are so low they won't cover much. Be certain you have good coverage especially if you own a home or have any assets at all.

Nearly any insurance company can be miserable or great. You need a good agent. It's a good idea to shop around every so often but not a good idea to shop around each year. Rates vary dramatically based on a number of factors.

Agreed ! My dad and grandfather were in the insurance business and it s wise to make sure you have THE RIGHT coverages

But its equally important to UNDERSTAND what you should/shouldn't use insurance for

If they offer more coverage than the basic required by law, you can bet that they make more money on the extended coverage. Therefore, in the long run, odds are you're best off with the least insurance possible.

Don't ask me my opinion of insurance in general...

GEICO, $2000/year for me, '06 Subaru, lowest options all around except for $1000 deductible comprehensive/collision, required for my loan.

There's something about 23 yr old males with 290hp cars that insurance companies don't like. I'm looking forward to my 25th birthday and home ownership.
