I've been going through all my finances..:puke::puke::puke:trying to keep better track of everything. I was thinking if something dire happened in the banking world and I didn't have access to my money..I'd be screwed..like if credit cards didn't work either. I'm thinking I'm going to stash some cash..not for a rainy day but for a real emergency..I was thinking about doing it at work as well in case of backup but I'm nervous cause we have a cleaning service..is this a good idea or am I just paranoid???

Sounds like the old people who have been calling in at work are rubbing off on you. ;)

Personally, I wouldn't do it. Too much risk for it to disappear, and for me, too easy to spend it. What sort of dire thing are you anticipating that would prevent you from accessing your money at the bank? It's insured, so if the bank went under, you'd still get your money. It's not Y2K. ;) I just don't get your concern, I guess.

I have been using Microsoft Money to keep track of all my finances for about the last 7-8 years and I'd totally be lost with out it now.

I usually have a couple hundred bucks lying around, nothing major. I figure if the entire banking industry disappeared over night, I'd have bigger things to worry about.

DO NOT keep serious $$$ in your office or your home .unless you've got a SERIOUS SAFE --- Obama just today signed legislation guaranteeing up to 250,000 PER individual under FDIC in each FDIC affilliate bank

QFT.

Plus if the banking industry disappeared, there would be massive deflation as the money supply disappears, so I'd only need $10 to live for a month anyways. Or I'd just resort to bartering. Get a "Will turn tricks for food" sign and all.

LOL and exactly. It's probably wiser to get the sign made up now, and keep that under your mattress.

If you're really super paranoid about it GSS and want to stash some cash, goto Home Depot or Lowes and get one of the small safe/fire boxes and put some in there (probably along with things like your passport and other assorted important papers - lease agreement, car loan info, retirement account info, will, etc) - keep a key somewhere around your place and stash a second key either at work/your parents house, etc.

Look at it kind of like an in home safe deposit box

Nice..I'll give Microsoft money a try as I'd like to keep some sort of spending journal. I'm forunate that next month I'll totally pay off my credit card bill and be debt free and likely buy some more CDs..I'm thinking about buying Crunk Hits and Nelly..lol

But I'm definitely going to stash away some cash..not for a rainy day but for an emergency..

MS Money is a ROYAL PAIN IN THE ASS to get everything loaded in there. Plan in spending a few hours (4-6) setting it up if you plan to track EVERYTHING (paychecks, taxes, car payments, rent, bills, CD's, stocks, 401k, ira's).

After you get it all set up though, it will tell you when bills are coming due, reminders on rent, payments and when CD's will expire...

Also, if you start using it, back up your money file often.

I'll going to give mint.com a try to track my spending..I'd like to start some sort of spending journal beginning June 1st. I've always been aware of my savings which are all in short-term CDs but I don't like to acknowledge my short-term spending...plus I can go a little credit card crazy at the bar or on ski trips. One thing is that my car is now a company car so I don't pay for gas, insurance or a payment which saves me several hundred a month..and I also got a nice raise but I still just keep spending freely..and not putting much away..With my 30th birthday in 2 months..I need to just chill a little...a spending diet..I'll be glad I did come ski season..

Usint Mint.com is a really good idea. Sorry I didn't think of that sooner. It's much simpler to set up your accounts. If I never used MS Money, I'd probably still use Mint, but it had a hard time tracking things like stock options, espp.

I just have a checking account and my CDs so it's easy..
