Date(s) Skied: 2/2/2007 9:30 am - 4:00 pm
Resort or Ski Area: Catamount - Hillsdale, NY
Conditions: Manmade packed powder, hard pack in some areas in the afternoon, mid 30s, no wind
Trip Report: Boy was I pleasantly surprised to see Catapult open and seeded bumps on Offstage. The sun was out for the first 1/2 hour so I was a giddy little skier this morning.
I started out with Ridge Run > Mountain View > Colonel's Caper > Esplanade. The mtn. was really quiet in the morning. It gave me the opportunity to really crank up the speed and see how I have progressed. Catamount has done a great job expanding their terrain. Base depth on most trails was great. It was a little thinner in some of the areas skier's left.
I sampled everything skier's left in the morning. Upper and Lower Sidewinder is a really fun trail. It did get really skied off as the day progressed. Upper and Lower Alley Cat was great too. Upper Alley seemed to have some thin cover later in the day. I saw some grass and a nice big rock poking out. I spent most of my morning do laps on Upper Sidewinder > Chute > Offstage to play in the bumps.
The bumps were seeded, seemed really spread out and odd shaped. There were virtually no troughs. After a weekend of skier traffic they should be in good shape. The top quarter of the mogul field was low angle, the middle section had a nice pitch, and the bottom quarter was back to low angle.
After lunch I took one run down Catapult. It was edgable but showed the scars of the groomers. With no sun and little skier traffic it never really softened up. So that meant heading back to the bumps. I did laps of the Upper Glade > Lower Glade > Offstage. I was trying to do my part skiing in those bumps so I would bomb the Glades to get back to those bumps.
Just before 4 my legs started to feel like rubber so I decided that this would be my last run. I stuck with what worked for me all afternoon. I hit the top section of low angle moguls, bailed for the middle section, and dropped back in for the last section of low angle bumps. The school groups were starting to arrive so it was good timing.
The Cat has done a great job expanding terraing and adding the their base. Cover was thin in a few areas but overall the mountain was in great shape. I skied up to the chair almost all day. I waited in line maybe twice.
Today's Breakthrough - All those moguls at Sundown paid off. On the groomers I found myself reaching forward for my pole plant and really driving my shins into the tongue of my boots. I've said it in past trip reports but this time I mean it. I was ripping down those groomers. I mean really driving down hill and linking some good looking turns.
PS - After a full day on the slopes, these Dewar's on the rocks are kicking my ass!
