Date(s) Skied: 12/29/2006
Resort or Ski Area: Catamount Ski Area
Conditions: Loose granular, a few death cookies up top, rocks and brown snow everywhere, 40ish, no wind, bright sunny skies
Trip Report: Ugh. As I pulled into the lot I quickly realized that the full day that I hoped for would be a half day. I was speaking with a member of the staff in the parking lot and had to confirm my suspicion. "Did you guys blow last night?" The answer, "No." They did blow on Wed. but the temps didn't get low enough last night. It was 8:15 and the lot was already filling up. There were multiple race teams that had practice as well.
I could see brown patches all over Catamount and On Stage. Upper and lower glade didn't look too good either. The new quad was running so that was a plus. I was riding the Catamount lift by 8:30. I took a run down Catamount and then On Stage before hitting the new quad. Nice lift. Not as fast as I thought it would be, but better than the old yellow chair. Upper Glade had two random patches of death cookies that never seemed to break up as the temps and skier traffic increased. The Glades funnel down into the two before mentioned blues. As the morning went on the condition down below got worse. More rocks and more of the bleeping brown snow. I spent most of my time lapping the Glades. As the crowds grew I just about had it. I took my last run at 11:30. Upper Glade was getting a bit scratchy so I threw in the towel early.
On a good note, I started to really feel what its like to use your edges. After three days on my Skier's Edge I'm starting to really tip my boots and engage the edges. Cool feeling.
So despite the crowds and questionable conditions I had a good day. A day of skiing is better than a day of work no matter what.
