We're going to be in the southern Berkshires this week visiting family and want to ski one day. We've never been to either one. Both areas are $20 Mon.-Thurs. We're good skiers and I know these areas are pretty small and tame, but we're just looking for a little fun for short money. What do any of you who are knowledgeable recommend?

Butternut is flat as a pancake.

Cataount isn't very challenging either but is better than Butternut.

Butternut - Much better snowmaking and grooming, more trails, but flat
Catamount - Weaker snowmaking, fewer trails, but overall steeper

Skied Catamount yesterday per your advice. Had an enjoyable day. Wind never materialized, clouds disappeared and a bluebird day ensued. The trails were OK and we even did some glades and actually found some powder. Trails were hardpacked and fast; in fact Catapult opened in the PM with snowmaking, but was still a sheet of ice. A few people in over their heads had some major problems getting down. Still a good deal for $20.

Cool. Glad you had fun. Catapult is best in March when it softens up. Mid-winter it's always a hardpack sheet.

does butternut have anything resembling moguls? taking my daughter out Saturday with a friend so we thought we might try some place new? but both kids get a kick out of moguls (like on exhibition @ sundown) and don't want to disappoint them, or at least set the expectations correctly.

I actually have heard from a few people that there are some great bumps on Downdraft right now. Maybe call them to confirm.

for some reason didn't see this the first time i looked but found the conditions report
BUMPS - with a smooth lane groomed down skiers right. Take the challenge and tackle Upper Downspout's mogul field! Overnight snowmaking!

even with the groomed lane it might be too much for the girls to handle. megan freaks when she sees the black diamond.
