Never have had and never will have a Facebook account. Small forums like this are the extent of my social media presence.

I was talking to my son about this and he said that at least here on Alpinezone the posters have made the modest effort to find a ski specific forum and sign up for a membership whereas on reddit 99% of the posters have no clue what they're talking about. They're not really that interested in the topic and only stumble on to the discussion.

No Instagram here. I don't care for the Twitter format. I signed up for Blue sky, but same basic format as Twitter. I don't particularly care for Reddit either and basically only end up on it via Google searches for something.

I basically use Facebook as a calendar, the free picture hosting and occasionally scroll for funny content friends share.

Ironically, I always eschewed Facebook, but signed up when I moved to Utah 1.5 years ago, thinking it would be a good way to keep in touch with all my friends on the east coast, and to some extent my extended family. But it seems many people who had accounts dont post much or anymore, and some that did even in the short 1.5 years I've been there stopped posting or post less. What's the point is the TLDR. Kind of seems like a dying media?

The only social media I find truly valuable is Twitter. There is no substitute for breaking news, not even close. Something could happen in Uganda, and 8 minutes later there will be video on Twitter. Incredibly valuable for stock trading as well for this same reason.

As for AlpineZone, I trust virtually everyone on here's opinion when it comes to skiing (equipment, conditions, new resorts, and the like) and I find that valuable, as well as a relatively mature way to discuss skiing trends, the industry, happenings, new ski news around the nation, etc.... Were I to ever leave, I wouldnt randomly come back here occasionally just to post comments mocking people who are (checks notes) posting here. That's just........ weird.

I use Facebook for funny and sometimes questionable jokes. I send it to my daughter (she's 38). Also I have no phone so messenger is my of staying in touch if I'm away.

Personally never met or skied with anyone on here. It would be interesting to meet some of you characters. I'd love to ski with Kusty some day as your sense of humor hits the spot! The other guy I'd love to ski with is Jim from DC/UT,... love seeing your pictures that you post. I come here to occasionally post and also just to take a break in my day at work to see what's going on. Lots of entertainment and I even get some good info on ski equipment. My only Pet Peeve are the Rob Katz memes that are constantly posted,... its gotten kind of old.

I'm only here for the Katz memes

I wanna rip bonghits with kusty for hours.

I've skied with lots of old and current posters. Never met a bad one yet.

I’ve already posted this here but I just love it so much.

My favorite cannabis producer has sugarloaf on their winter packaging. It geeks me out so much.

I don't do any social media unless that is what you call the several ski forums I post on? These forums are all I need to feed my ski habit and share the stoke. I can't tell you how many great people I've met and skied with through them, all over the country, for the last 20 years. Just bought a pair of skis from a forum friend when I drove through CO a couple weeks ago. Now loving my $300 bargain skis in Utah.

There are a lot of folks who are kind of goofy or off-putting on-line, but real fun to ski with. Never judge anyone here until you meet them in real life. Skiing is the great equalizer, bridge across the generation gap, and peace maker. We are one tribe!

Today (5 Feb 2025) at Snowbird, UT, with a forum friend in the vicinity of Silver Fox in Peruvian Gulch. "Snow that's good for you" kind of day, but hopefully refresh coming in next 48 hrs.

Can you imagine if NH Tramway shuts them down...

that failure is indicative of an error somewhere in the maintenance stream, with other grips in question in my view. full disass of 100% grips, inspection, repairs as needed then reopen. it's the prudent thing to do.

I’ve skied with at least 10 people from here over the years. I can’t speak for the folks that have transplanted west but, for the New England ski nerd, AZ hits the spot.
Yeah, obviously this place has changed since its heyday under Greg from 2005-2011 or so.

I would actually say this site may be more active this winter than it has been in a few years. To say there is no information to be found at all is total bullshit. I've been to quite a few new-to-me (or very rare-for-me) resorts this winter and every time I've asked for info, someone has been there to provide answers. Also the "half-dozen" claim is bullshit. Just for shit & giggles I went back and counted 35 different posters in this thread alone. All but a couple have been here for years and have hundreds of posts. Theres also a few folks who I would still consider regulars here that haven't posted in this thread. You don't need thousands of active posters to drive good conversation and to get good info.

I get it, this site isn't what it was in its heyday. But I feel that the discussion and information is just as good now as it was then. A lot of it hides in the individual ski area threads. I blame the megapasses for that, back in the day I think most people here skied all over and now most fall under Ikon, Epic, or have a pass to an indy mountain that they mostly stick to. The threads kind of follow that mentality...before people started new threads all the time and now a lot of folks just kind of hang out in their home mountain threads and sometimes poke around the others. But coming here to try to find out some info for something and have it answered is something that I truly believe happens just as often now as it did then.

Do I miss having engaging admins and lots of meet-ups? Absolutely. It seemed like there was one or two every week back 15-20 years ago. Now it seems like the only time the community comes together is basically just late May weekends at Killington. I never got to go to a Sugarloaf Summit. I've still met a decent amount of you (but I don't think anyone in the past 7 or 8 years) and I've always had a great time whenever skiing with anyone on here. Maybe someone can try to organize something at some point (and I would be willing to help if that ever happened) but I feel like that ship has mostly sailed.

The truth is social media is an absolute cesspool. If you go to just about any skiing group on Facebook and try to find what you're looking for, all you do is sift through endless bullshit hoping to find something from the small number of actual trustworthy people. When I come here I know who almost everyone is and I know who's interests most closely align with mine and try to take in their reports and info the most, but I also know I can trust 95% of people on here to give good honest info and I also know who the 5% are that are just here to troll. There's some good ski forums out there for sure, but as long as the same 50 or so active posters here keep the cogs churning then I see no reason to jump ship. Sometimes I read boards like TGR and my head spins with the amount of bullshit and dick slinging that gets spewed on a daily basis and it's refreshing not really having to deal with that here. On one hand it sucks that Nick is basically an absentee landlord, but on the other it's cool that he keeps the lights on and we can hang around free of charge.

TLDR: Vail sucks, this place is alright.
