Is he an Elmo fan, BTW? It's always pissed me off that Elmo refers to himself in the third person. I always thought it was bad for language development.

PS...my wife is a speech pathologist. I'll ask her later on and get back to you with a more professional opinion. This history teacher is first to admit he's in over his head. ;)

Come to think of it he does love Elmo ..

Well, there's a good chance that he's trying to mimic his icon. Perhaps an adult should watch Elmo with him and comment on Elmo's speech patterns. "Look how silly Elmo is talking. Elmo shouldn't say 'Elmo hungry' he should say 'I am hungry.' That's Elmo sure is silly.'

He started talking at a very early age and I am continually amazed at his sentence structure at times. He speaks sentences where the grammar is correct and he clearly communicates .. He would say "Poppie come outside and play" .. not just say "outside Poppie"

Should be an easy fix.

Sounds pretty normal to me. My 2 1/2 year old is also talking up a storm. A lot of "Me do it." It's too cute and sometimes you almost don't want to correct her because it's so funny. I ask her a lot of questions, like "guess who's coming over?" and she invariably answers with "what?". I think 3 years old is one of the best ages since it's really only at that point where you can hold some semblance of a full conversation with kids.

My nearly 3 year old has definitely referred to herself in the 3rd person before (as well as assigning herself different names, and who can forget her 3 different imaginary friends). She also spoke with proper sentence structure (aside from 3rd person) at a very young age, which I still find amazing.

I'm sure it's normal.

AS I recall from various child psychology classes many moons ago, it's totally normal at that age. The mind hasn't developed the concept of "self" fully, so the thought pattern isn't "I want this" yet.

Read up on Piaget- some of his findings make for fun games with kids:

One of my favorites is to show an object, such as a ball or block, and ask where the ball is. Kids get that one easy. Then put a cup over the ball, adn ask where it is. young kids, up to 2 1/2 or 3, won't be able to tell you where it is- it's just disappeared.

my two-year-and-four-month old not only refers to him in the third person when he spontaneously talks about himself, but he does so with his nickname, not his real name. but, if you ask him a specific question that requires him to respond with his name, he'll use his real name.
