So driving home last night, one of my neighbors had Christmas lights up and on already... I found this to be absurdly early.

Have you seen any yet?
Do you care?
Am I crazy for letting this bother me (even though it's only slightly)?

Two houses on an adjacent block have their lights up already. Too early.

I could understand putting them up now, while the weather is nice, and not turning them on until a little closer to Thanksgiving.

We thought we saw some down the road from our place in VT. It was just some Halloween lights though.

I was picking up a couple of shirts at Kohl's for my kids yesterday and I felt like I had been suddenly transported to Santa's Village up at The Northpole  Too early!!!! November 1st - fine I can live with that, but atleast let me get my Halloween fix before Santa's being thrown at me!!

Maybe they're Indian. They're celebrating Diwali now -- the festival of lights.

Don't you hear the great sucking sound of retail marketing???
Here's the marketing plan:

  • Buy your gifts now while the selection is best and you won't have to deal with the throngs later.
  • About a month from now, you'll forget what you bought, and buy more. Next, you'll start feeling guilty that you bought more for jimmy than bobby and go buy more.
  • Next, all the sentimental sappy things start making you feel like you should buy for that extended family that you haven't seen in 10 years.
  • Next, the after-Christmas sales that start on Dec 20th.
  • Then Dec 25th - head to CVS when you have that Oh s--- moment, I forgot to buy mom a gift.
  • After Christmas, return things, buy more.
  • Sometime about March, you'll uncover those things you hid away and forgot to gift to others. Put them away for next year.
  • July, find those things, keep them for yourself. August - after the fifth bill collector call you put all your holiday gifts on your home equity line.
  • September - repeat.
Fanatical Skier's Plan

  • Sept-Oct-Nov Early season shopping at ski swaps
  • Sept Tune skis
  • Oct Collect ski passes, vouchers
  • Oct re-tune skis
  • Nov holiday shopping - socks, boots, boards
  • Nov Re-tune skis
  • Nov begin skiing
  • Dec Cameo appearance at office party, shoot out early for night skiing
  • Dec 24 home from the slopes in time for dinner
  • Dec 25 CVS - buy holiday gifts & wrap
  • Dec 25 sneak out for runs in the AM, back for dinner and to kiss Aunt Bertha
  • Jan-April - Missing in action
  • May - look at charge card bill for first time in four months. Get home equity load
  • Jun-Jul-Aug - Troll eBay for 10.99 skis, Take ski racks off car so bike rack can fit. Obligatory beach vacation. Be generally miserable.
Repeat

Yup, especially this year! My thing is, and I've been this way since I was about 5 or 6, is for me the true Christmas shopping season/Christmas decoration wasn't allowed to begin until AFTER my birthday which is Nov 26th! Up until then it was all about ME! ;) :spin: ;) So this year since my b-day = turkey day (trust me, birthday cake AFTER Thanksgiving dinner isn't nearly as goood as it sounds :puke:) the Christmas Decoration/shopping season can begin on Black Friday! :)
