Yes, just learned a few days in the Gunks, some of those cliffs on amazing. I started out on a 5:2, but by the end of the day, I was on a 5:7. I'll probably go back to the Gunks, and I'll check out the local CT cliffs as well. Skiing is the best sport and rock climbing is the next best thing.

Holy bump... yeah I don't think I even climbed once since I posted that. I've been meaning to get back at it this year but mountain biking is sort of getting in the way.

I'd like to do some more climbing. I have a harness, but no shoes, limited beiners and just a 40 ft length of 8 mm cord....I've been to a gym twice and had fun... best I could manage was about a 5.9 though. Maybe half of a 5.10 route.

what the heck does v5 or 5:2 etc. mean in lay mans term? how is it calculated?

I don't know how it's calculated, but up to 5.7 is kind of beginner stuff, 5.8-5.9 is intermediate and 5.10 + is advanced on to insane.

I haven't climbed in 10+ years and don't think I could pull myself up a 5.8 now. I have an old (ca 1995) lightly used Arcteryx harness and air traffic controller repelling device if anyone wants them.

I'm thinking more 5.9 and down is beginner stuff, 5.10 and 5.11 intermediate, 5.12 advanced, 5.13 expert, and 5.14 insane.

You're probably right. i was just trying to make myself feel better about what I've climbed.

Lol, 5.9 isn't beginner... I have some fit friends who just started climbing not too long ago... took them a few months of sorta dedication to get to climbing a 5.9 clean at the gym. Plus, climbing a 5.9 roof is different from a 5.9 face, or offwidth, or crack - takes completely different techniques for each. If you climb 5.9 faces doesn't mean you can climb a 5.9 crack.
<5.6-7ish is beginner for most, unless you're a featherweight and can use power (and not technique) to get you up climbs... sounds like someone I know :D
5.7-5.9 intermediate
5.10 and up and you need to have more commitment and be climbing regularly... for most.

5.* is the Yosemite Decimal System (YDS):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yosemite_Decimal_System
http://www.climber.org/data/decimal.html

V ratings are for bouldering. I believe a V0 corresponds to a ~5.10 in the YDS.
http://www.getbeta.com/GradingMatrix.asp

The ratings are all subjective and the rating honor is given to the first person who fully climbs a route. Some climbers grade easy, some grade hard. Back in the 70s they used to think that a 5.9 was the hardest rating possible... until they realized that there were harder things and that 5.9 would not cover what was possible. This caused some early 5.9s to feel very hard now.

..with no technical stuff...usually to break up a paddling day

You beat me to it deadheadskier!
Any stuff I attempt is usually under 20'...usually either when I see a face happenning in the middle of the woods or on my usual planned hikes that break up a day of paddling.
First time I've read this Austin, when I come upon something up in the woods I'll make a note to get a few pics...

I used to climb---haven't done it since college----spent most of my days at the Gunks, Owls Head ( upstate NY) and Rattle Snake Point (Canada). Topped out at 5:9

Have done my fair share of splunking as well---all good stuff

if you are going to use those 40 ft of cord you better untie the hooker in your trunk.
