It is beginning to look like if you want to do it in May without hiking, your choice is going to be Attitash, MT Snow, Sugarbush, or Wildcat. I plan on being at Sugarbush for the AZ day.

No way will Attitash or Mount Snow be open until may...AT is hard pressed to make it to the end of March and MS is lucky to stay open until mid April. Lack of visits/revenue. I highly doubt that Peaks will decide to keep both resorts open into May...even if they had the snow they'd be operating at a loss.

The island of misfit toys.
My problem is I have no experience with Boyne although they have presented a good front in the initial days after the season ended. They seem like they want to improve SR and have presented some aggressive plans. Maybe I was asleep at the wheel and missed the announcement about CNL, but their role here comes as a total surprise.

I'm not a fan of silent partners because they usually aren't.

For certain the story has been out there since August 3rd. Skip King says longer than that.

Jim...c'mon, who are you trying to fool...you're happier than a pig in slop because ASC no longer owns Sunday River and neither does Les Otten. The CNL role was never made public until now...but a few folks in western maine knew about it.
As a SR local I'm looking forward to seeing what happens and have no reservations that CNL is involved...Boyne has plenty of experience with them from Brighton and Cypress so they know what they've signed up for...I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and see how it plays out on the hill.

Heh...you and I could go on about this forever. Because I would be thrilled that ASC no longer owned the place. You bet! And the CNL thing wouldn't matter to me at all. Because ASC is gone. And of course I would give them at least a season to show me the money if I had doubts.

Look, don't come in here spoiling my fun! If I wanted to spur a few more pages of conversation I'd segue us back to the Killington thread where nobody who skis there seems to feel that way.

Ooops! Guess I did so anyway.

Brighton and CNL are partners are both Brighton and Cypress. I have posted my thoughts about Brighton before but has does anybody else have experience with Cypress?

But how else would they attract a year round clientele?

I'm having trouble picturing a moose having fun at a water park.

I don't see people going to to Sugarloaf to go to a waterpark. That's what Saco is for. Although a small one inside would be popular with kids in the winter it's not going to draw people up in the summer.

Neither do I...that's why I made the crack about moose.

Sugarloaf is about a 10 hour drive for me. Not a daytrip.

But I want to ski there this coming season, so I'm working out a Sugarloaf/Wildcat/MWV-Sherburne-Gulf of Slides ski trail trip for sometime in mid to late Feb. Time will vary depending on conditions.

Yup, they will need to cater more to folks from Maine. I think a series of music festivals and sporting events will bring a lot more people up that way than trying to make the place upscale. You go upscale and you won't get many more people coming up from the south because they have plenty of options much closer and you'll drive the locals away. Saddleback more than ever is becoming a real competitor to the Loaf.

I must also add Saddleback to my list for next Feb. Thinking of making it a 2 week vacation.

That sounds like a great trip. Wish I could do something like that, kids are too small for now. Once they're bigger I'd like to travel all around with them like Loafer89 does with his son. I'm already brainwashing them. My (almost) 4 yr old is asking to watch ski videos on the computer. And I'm going to get some plastic skis to pull the one year old around on in the yard.

I dont think that saddleback is necessarily competition for the loaf. The biggest challenge faced by both is getting people to drive up there. If anything the increased investment in the general area might lure people during both the summer and winter.

Think about it from the persepcitve of an urban skier, the idea of being able to ski two areas might tip the scales when considering either maine or vermont.

alright, okay, I'll let you get back to your devil's advocate role. You oughta throw a trip to sunday river in there too...get to know the place a little more...meet some of the good folks like BobR and THaller...hell, I'd even join you for a run and a beer.

Well, the length of the trip will certainly depend on my kids' school and soccer schedules. Kids sports have become crazy...it's year round, my 11 year old too. I usually let them decide if they want to stay home and stay with another family on their team to play in a tournament. In this case though, it won't work for 2 weeks. And I want them to come along on this trip especially because they appreciate new places and they've never been to Maine.

My 5 year old will ski wherever, as long as he's with Dad. My little ski shadow.

Only 1 run?

Or 1 run and many beers?

Because I've already met BobR.

But I haven't met Thaller yet. Maybe I should just go to Maine for 2 weeks and ski Sunday River a few days too.

That's a good point, but I think Saddleback has the advantage in the Summer with Rangley lake right there. Flagstaff is near Sugarloaf, but it is largely shut off from any development.

Defintely there is more activity in the summer months on the rangely lakes side. The challenge for sugarloaf will be getting the rangely lakes visitors to use their accomidations. A first class golf course along with family centric activities such as a water park, mountain coaster or alpine slide would go a long way.
