The island of misfit toys.
That's a good point, but I think Saddleback has the advantage in the Summer with Rangley lake right there. Flagstaff is near Sugarloaf, but it is largely shut off from any development.

Agreed. I was up there last week (my first time) and there was a lot more happening in Rangeley than there was in Kingfield.

Jim I bought when ASC owned the place. Know boyne is in control with CNL money. It will be interesting to see what happens. As an owner I feel like I made the Move at the perfect time. A chance for 4 season activities. A stable ownership organization. Everything about Boyne I have heard has been good. Seems like they intend on letting the folks at the river that know it run it. The river crew is part of the reason I'm there. Take a look at all the changes in the last year. I think the folks from Maine made out the best.

I like what he says. "Patient capital" is mighty important (don't get me started on hedge funds vs traditional mezzanine lenders in private equity), and he's right that adding investment by CNL to the lease basis is a good thing (basically, spending money on a new lift increases Boyne's lease payments, because CNL pays for it. So expansions have to make financial sense for both parties, but mostly for Boyne, who has the feet on the ground).

Overall, I like it.

No one is as busy as Smuggs in the summer, multi waterparks and all. Busy with familes everyday, has a very nice kids camp feel.

In one year CNL has become king of the NE ski resort companies.

Is CNL involved with Smuggs? I didnt see that on their portfolio page.

No way will Attitash or Mount Snow be open until may...AT is hard pressed to make it to the end of March and MS is lucky to stay open until mid April. Lack of visits/revenue. I highly doubt that Peaks will decide to keep both resorts open into May...even if they had the snow they'd be operating at a loss.

Attitash hasn't been open past the first week of April for the past five years. I dunno about 'hard pressed' to stay open through march. With the exception of last year, Attitash usually closes w/full coverage.

I was speaking more to the skier visits than conditions...they could stay open longer than Mount Snow based on the conditions most years...but their skier traffic seems to dry up sooner. Who knows...keep it open and maybe they'll come...but the suggestion that they'll make it until May was pie in the sky IMO.

One thing to note about Attitash is that it's summit elevation is almost the same as Mt. Snow's BASE elevation.

Doesn't Sunday River usually stay open until late April/Early May?

Historically sr would close the first week of may with a free day of skiing. A number of years ago they began to close near the end of april and reopen for 'may day'. Two years ago 'may day' was held on patriots day, this past year i think they made it through the third week of april. I do remember they extended the season one week past the scheduled closing day.

Going back to the 80's I seem to remember sr pushing it into may but that was also the days of early season down-loading on the locke triple.

SK posted somewhere We will ski well into April. I think if they stay open until April 20th most will be very pleased.

Why? When ASC owned it it seemed to stay open later than that regularly. I would expect most folks here to kill the new owners for not extending the season their first year of ownership.

Damned pot stirrer.

Lol Jim.

I think most of us liked the May Day, but it was just open day. Hope it stays open and we ski into May. 3rd week of April seems fair to me. Anything earlier I will be angry. Not that my feelings make a difference. When he said well into April not many complained.

Generally I would be happy with the friday before veterans day through April 20. Although I fall into the DINK category, I think many property owners with kids would highly appreciate lift sericed skiing during April vacation.

Enjoy it Bob, I'm nominating Jersey Joey as the new site pot stirrer.

Look, I think you guys are quite reasonable. You're happy ASC is gone. That would be enough for me. But your new owners have even made promises regarding improvements. So your group is happy and fairly willing to overlook the extended season issue. What else can you say?

The difference at that more southern resort is that the new owners are cautious and won't commit to much publicly and the regulars are more contentious and are itching for a fight after years of ASC abuse. Bad combo.
