I skied the Loaf for the first time last year. Awesome conditions, wide open terrain, and Keller Williams made for a terrific weekend.

My one complaint: Why are the snowfields not served by a dedicated lift? It would be nice to run lap after lap without having to traverse so much of the mtn... just sayin'

All in all, a great mtn for the East. You can bet I'll be back!

Nice pictures, yeay!! Love the Loaf, only get there a few times a year, but it's always great! Last February we got there the day before storm. Stayed at the Sugarloaf Inn, ate at 'The Rack', had too many beers (big surprise), and was one of the first in line at the Superquad. Then we just hit the trails at the Pine Quad over and over and over again! Pretty much non stop 'til one. Fun day!

I think the Sugarloaf Inn is THE place to stay at the Loaf.Even when I'm not staying there I park and boot up in the Inn.Much better than the trek to the main lodge from the normal parking areas. And great place to end the day after taking off the boots,it's only 10 steps away from a frosty one in your socks.

Couldn't agree with you more! You boot up, walk right out to the lift, ski back, relax, drink, eat, etc. Even staying there for a couple of days, you wouldn't have to leave!

nice serious stoke!!!!...is there skiing off the backside??

Backside Snowfields yes, followed by a traverse around to King Pine area. Unfortunately, I've never been fortunate enough to run it. Maybe this year, but doubtful as I'll be skiing primarily in VT and NH. Unless they have a free ticket from the Warren Miller movie again and you can use it for half price in the spring when the snowfields are open.

Thanks guys for all the compliments on the pics. I just joined this site yesterday and figured since I work up here running King Pine why not chat with some folks besides the ones on sugarloaftoday.com? Working that lift for 10 years +, I've seen some serious wind-- wind so strong and frequent there's no point in calling it hurricane force. One time I was working at the top of 3T and the wind must have been blowin' 60-80. The plywood board covering the snowmaking valves was hovering above surrounding floor. :-o I've seen chairs which if we ran the lift i.e. King Pine would likely derail, hit towers, or just freak the s#*! out of people. There are many times when we just have to close lifts for the publics safety and we're not being wussies. If I could call God to get an answer when the winds would abate, I would. Nature unfortunately is a bit more whimsical. Just wanted to throw this thought out there because I hear all the time "When's the wind going to stop?" Or another good one is "Doesn't seem that bad down here?" Well that's why they call it "down here" not "up there." don't mean to sound like a wise ass but come on, don't you think there'd be a difference in weather between the top and the bottom of King Pine with 1000 vertical feet? Also no forecast in the world can tell you what I can after working there for years and I'd say that there's no way to say "when the winds going to stop?" But it may decrease enough in an hour to run the lift. Next. . . we don't close lifts to save money or lack of staff. Sugarloaf's a big operation with big expectations and it should be but we do the best we can given how extreme the weather (ice storms) really the winds can be. I've skied all over the country but love the Loaf and call it home even if it does deserve the name "Windyloaf.":daffy::snow:

I also get those questions here all winter and I try not to laugh when I say hmmm....let me consult with my crystal ball. It's Maine, wait a minute and it will change or not. See you around the mountain fixedgrip!

Sadly I didn't get up last year. Hopefully this year will be different.

another loafer....

Hi fixedgrip16,
Nice pics...love that whole FrontFace! The mountain crew really does as good a job as the wind allows! I couldn't have hit the mountain better than the days I spent there last Winter. So many days with little to no wind, I couldn't believe it.
Steeze,
fixedgrip16 can give you more accurate info than I can...but it's been my $.01 observations that unless it gets a motha of a dump earlier...it's usually not until February...that the snow depth on the Backside is good enough.

$.01......

About the backside. . . the triangulated rocks up there stand 3-4 feet so you need close to 15 feet of unpacked snow to pack to a depth deep enough to cover said boulders. Of course, we'll open it with less that just means it's safe to ski not smart. . . at least for avoiding core-shots.
