I had no idea CT had 5 ski areas until I just consulted GOOG.

My extensive 37 seconds of research would seem to suggest that the skiing in CT is actually substantially worse than the Poconos judging from vertical and size, etc....

Though I do imagine the CT conditions are probably better than the Poconos 75% of the time, so there's that.

My opinion, not the biggest or the best but a damn good play ground in the back yard.

It is nice having them here, but my opinion is, "damn good" might be a bit much.

The way I see it. 45 minutes vs. 2 + hrs to the Catskills (my other day option), Vermont and New Hampshire are overnighters and its not practical for me to go up north every weekend but we ski every weekend between Turkey day and Mid April. Can leave the house by 8, ski 2 hours and be home by noon any weekday. A good place to go during holiday periods when I do not care to go up north. Gets the ski muscles in skiing shape making each trip up north or out west much more enjoyable. Had a fun for 4 hours yesterday morning on very good snow till the crowds on the trails started to get too much. Allows me to get upwards of 40+ days a season, which would probably be about 20 something without them. Accept them for what they are and use them as a playground luckly very close by.

I'm fairly certain I'll appreciate them more once I have kids and there are increasing demands on my time (assuming I'd even have time to ski I suppose). But I do those 6 hour Vermont drives pretty commonly, the 5 hours to LP a few times a season, and choose to drive the 3 hours to the Cats versus the 1 hour to Shawnee or 1h 10m to Camelback. It does help that I have a place to crash that's only just a bit > 1 hour from Platty.

You might BG. I used to avoid the Pocono's in favor of the Catskills, so I can understand your opinion towards them. It was 2 1/2 to Hunter in those days (202 not 287) and sometimes I did it both weekend days. I also have and still do make the drive up to both Vermont and New Hampshire. (going to Killington this weekend) But its nice to have (what I consider) a local option, and like I said doubles and probably almost triples the amount of days I get to ski. Every once in a while the skiing is quite good too.

PerspectIve....... live in NH and wish I had an option like the Poconos 45 minutes away. The "Pocono" sized areas (Crotched, Pats) are more like 1:15 away and I ski them frequently most years for quick morning hits when I don't want to drive 2 hours to Cannon or Wildcat.

If I lived in NJ or PA and was 45 mins from those areas I'd ski them a ton.

Ca. 1970, I lived in the NY Capital District. Snow quality was the driver because I was within a couple of hours of the Catskills, the Adirondacks, the Berkshires, the Greens and even places like Snow Ridge in Western NY. Over that region in a pre-snowmaking world, there were huge differences in snow quality.

Today, let's say one lives in the greater Boston area and is willing to drive 2 hours. In a world of modern snowmaking and grooming, I suggest the answer to the question is more about crowd, distance and personal terrain preferences. It is rare there are huge differences in snow among areas in close proximity.

However, if one is driving from the DC area, 6 to 8 hours for a weekend, and one is looking for stumps and bumps (glades and moguls) differences in snow, either quantity or projected temperatures, might drive the decision.

At Camelback because of the HSQ's, you can really yo-yo, and get a significant amount of runs in. I dare say 10/hr if your really hammering it.
