After a bit of uncertainty because of concern about potential NIAR that was predicted for today, I bit the bullet and tripped over to Elk Mountain. It was my first visit to this place and the first time I've skied in PA in at least 15 years. An hour and 25 minutes after leaving home I hit the parking lot.
The snow report claimed 9 of 27 trails opened and this amounted to 4 top-to-bottom runs. I was impressed with the snow quality at this small, friendly mountain. Machine-made, groomed (except one trail left ungroomed, "Tunkhannock") snow was fast. With fewer than 50 people total on the mountain all day, the skiing surface changed very little the whole time I was there. I was pleasantly surprised by the pitch of the two diamond trails, the afore mentioned "Tunkhannock" and "Seneca", that came off of the summit.
All in all I was impressed by this small ski area. I hope to get back when it's fully open.
