. It's surprising that golfers hardly ever lock up their clubs when they go in the clubhouse for lunch/beers,,because golf equipment is usually more than ski equipment.

Demographics. Most skies are stolen by younger persons. Most golfers are older and have an income.

Useally seperating them is sufficent. I don't think theives watch you seperating them. The QUICK GRAB is what their after. As well as the latest, coolest new gear.

Beware holidays and college breaks, as well as popular bus destinations.

I am going to start using my retractable lock now. Like everyone says it is more of a deterant and hopefully they move onto an easier grab. And with all the people usually floating around the ski racks, a guy with a pair of cutters will kinda stick out as a thief pretty easy.

I don't hear of too many skis/boards getting stolen from Hunter(major metro)..
Maybe because NYer's are a little more savy... Since we're generalizing... :)

I know security keeps a strong eye on it - and the State and Local police are always hanging around...
I know of busts like you referred to in the past where someone has a bunch of skis in the trunk...

maybe you don't hear much about stolen skis at hunter because youre the one stealing them. you should treat your fellow skiers and riders with respect not the way you treat everyone else. i was very happy the day shortski banned your sorry ass from the kilington zone website. you are mean and you need to treat people better...and stop stealing their skis and their snoboards. glad you ski at hunter and not in maine or vermont.

In lieu of complementary ski watch, I use the retractable lock on my and daughter's skis. Used watch so far this season at Wachusett, Bretton Woods, and today at Gunstock. And always leave a few bucks for a tip as it's greatly appreciated by those on watch duty and a small investment to keep your equipment safe.

On the funny side, I did experience theft today at Gunstock when at end of day, I went to retrieve cheap cooler in lodge and found that someone had lifted a 10oz sprite and 16oz pepsi from it (and no, my daughter had not been back to it since lunch)! Given the cost of food and drink at ski areas, can't blame 'em.

My son's bag was stolen or accidentally loaded into someone else's car today. He is 14, and we finally have him managing his own ski stuff. So he brought his skis, poles & bag to the racks by the loading zone near the Overlook Lodge parking lot at Belleayre. He left his skis leaning on the rack, and the bag was under his skis. He went back in for about 2 minutes to catch up with the rest of the fam. We get out there and the only thing on the rack were his skis and poles. The parking attendants were clueless, "There have been so many people loading up here it is tough to tell..." My son says there were other bags there when he left his there, now all bags are gone.

So we lost a pair of leased size 27.5 Technica ski boots, an old Red helmet, goggles, new ski socks and gloves, and a neck warmer. Not to mention the Potter Brothers ski bag. And that might have been the problem - lots of people have those. My wife left our info with guest services, because we are hoping someone goes home and unpacks the car and discovers stuff that isn't theirs and has enough decency to call the mountain or bring it back there. We are supposed to ski tomorrow. Guess I am buying some new stuff at Jimmy's Belleayre Ski Shop on the way to the mountain tomorrow. Mostly, I am hoping that next September the place we leased the boots from won't notice that I am returning a different set of boots than we leased.

The concept of a complementary ski check is very good imho. It's not really that it's so bad to pay a buck or two but the logistics of finding cash in my ski gear is just a pain-and that gets complicated with kids etc. The tipping concept should be encouraged strongly-handled correctly, that could be one of the better jobs on a busy day.

Now that we have new skis, we definately use a lock. With our older gear the last few years, we didn't bother. Sucks that there are actually people out there that would even think about stealing equipment. You'd think if it was some kids, the parents would question where they got the gear from.....just a thought.

For the record... I didn't get banned from that place...
I choose not to post after Shortski came after me and my support on my brother serving in Iraq. He used his moderator power to change my posts dealing with this topic. I found it to be disrespectful and over the line so he can kiss my ass... And since I can't block a moderator I chose not to post... Once that fattass finally drops dead of a heart attack, accidently swallows one of his snowblades or runs one of his corvettes into a tree I'll post there...

Happy New Year...

We got the stuff back. It was a local skier and family who accidentally took the bag. But we didn't get the call until after we left the mountain today. Cost me some dough in rental helmet & boots ($20). The kid needed new goggles anyway ($55).

Since we checked lost and found over and over again today and it didn't show up, I decided to buy a pair of new Nordica boots anyway, some couple season old model, for $99. Wouldn't you know we got the call from Belleayre lost & found (guest services) on the way back to our local place. The boots were molded to my son's feet, so we won't be returning them. They are way better than the leased boots anyway. Hope he gets a couple seasons out of them.

I am kinda angry that they couldn't have brought the bag back to Belleayre earlier or phoned in yesterday. Did it take that long to empty the ski stuff out of the car? I'm glad we got the stuff back, but if I had seen the person, I would have said how stupid could you be when loading the car and maybe you owe me for the rentals it cost me today.

At least you got your stuff back. Sounds like an honest mistake was made. That almost happened to me a couple of weeks ago. I was just going out of the lodge and I saw a person pick up my skis and poles. I watched to see if they would put them back, but was trying to put on the skis. I asked what he was doing and he said that he just rented them. I told him that they were mine and he apologized profusely. He didn't seem to be very knowledgable about skis so I trusted that he was telling me the truth. If I hadn't come out? I don't know if they would have been there or not. FWIW his boots would not fit in my bindings and he seemed confused as to how to put them on. I think it was an honest mistake.
