RIP. I was so busy enjoying the snow I had no idea.

Appropriate that she passed on such a snowy day.

Ethel M. Slutzky

Published: Tuesday, January 5, 2010 2:15 AM EST
Ethel M. Slutzky, 92, passed away Jan. 3, 2010, following a long illness. Ethel was born in Manhattan on March 11, 1917, to Philip D. Phillips and Bertha (Klein) Pbillips. Ethel spent her youth in Manhattan and the Bronx and graduated from Evander Childs High School in 1934.

After high school, Ethel worked for various firms around New York City as a courier, stenographer and bookkeeper. She visited Hunter with her mother and Aunt Rose starting in the early 1930s and occasionally vacationed there, where she eventually met her future husband Orville at the Sunny Brook House. Ethel married Orville Slutzky on July 11, 1942. They spent their first years apart, while Orville served in World War II. After raising three children, she returned to work full-time at Hunter Mountain Ski Bowl as bookkeeper and office manager, where she remained until failing health gradually prevented her from working.

Ethel was a charter member of the Greene County Women’s League. She was a 50-year member of the Mt. Star Oasis Chapter OES. Ethel also was a member of the board of trustees for the Hunter Public Library. Over the years, she raised $45,000 through book sales at Hunter Mountain for the benefit of the library. Ethel was also a member of the Sisterhood of the Hunter Synagogue, as well as a board member of the Hunter Synagogue and a longtime treasurer of the Hunter Civic Association.

Throughout Ethel’s life, she was an avid sports enthusiast, playing golf, bowling, skiing and hiking. She used to hike to the summit of Colonel’s Chair before Hunter Mountain Ski Bowl was even developed.

Ethel is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Orville. Together, they raised three children, Carol (Peter) Slutzky-Tenerowicz, Elka Park, Paul (Amy) Slutzky, Hunter and Gary (Barbara) Slutzky, Hunter. She was predeceased by her beloved sister Sylvia Shershoff. Ethel will be deeply missed by her family, including nine grandchildren (Michelle Byrne, Jamie Grant, Meghan Ginsburg, Jake Slutzky, Sarah Slutzky, Rachael Tenerowicz, Elizabeth Slutzky, Shana Slutzky, and Tanner Slutzky), five great-grandchildren, in addition to nieces, nephews and a multitude of friends.

A celebration of her life and funeral services will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the Hunter Synagogue, 7879 Main St., Hunter.

In lieu of flowers, donadons may be given to the Hunter Public Library, the Tannersville Area Health Committee, the Greene County Women’s League, or the Tannersville FD Rescue Squad.
