Driving back from Vermont this morning, we took the scenic route by Lake Sunapee and through Newbury, NH. I was surprised to see a Toyota 4Runner Police SUV at a speed trap going through town.

I can't say that I ever recall seeing a police vehicle anywhere that wasn't a Ford, Chevy or Dodge.

I don't necessarily think municipalities should have to buy American vehicles. I mean, I don't drive American myself. I just have never seen a Toyota cop car before.

Considering a lot of the american cars are made out of this country while the so called imports are made here I see nothing wrong with it

Honda Goldwings aren't uncommon. But mostly, foreign full-size cars, as sold in the U.S., are luxury cars. Probably because of buy American pressure on the governement, so they don't bother federalizing the Toyota Crown or Honda Legend or anything like that.

Although the Chevy Caprice that will be introduced next year is actually a Holden Caprice, designed and built in Australia.

I went to high school in Lisbon Maine. The cop cars there were Volvos. This was in the late 80s

Funny you posted this. We were coming back from Manchester VT on Saturday. Just as we were driving by the Stratton access road, we saw a local cop in a Honda Pilot. That was the last vehicle I'd expect to see a cop in.

I'd be curious if there was a company out there that outfits Pilots for police duty. It doesn't seem like the Pilot would be an idea policy mobile. It's bascially an Accord.

It's not like you need an urban assault vehicle in Vermont.

Nor foreign, but my town had some Chevy Chevettes as police cars back in the 80's. I don't know wtf they were thinking. Didn't last very long though.

You don't, but police vehicles tend to be a bit beefier; usually body on frame vehicles. With front wheel drive Impalla's being the exception to the rule.

Now that the Crown Vic has been retired, I don't believe this is true. Cop cars are unibody. From a safety point of view, unibody cars are safer than body on frame cars.

A lot of police departments are out shopping for a new platform since the Crown Vic is going away. It worked well since the frames could easily be "untweaked" after a mishap and there's an insane amount of parts floating around out there. There is something to be said about a good ol' V8 powered RWD workhorse.
