CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine -- Grab the kids, load up the Subaru and head to the mountain. It's February vacation, and there's no better place to spend it than Sugarloaf if you're a family who loves to ski and ride together. As always, there are tons of activities planned for the week to keep the whole family entertained Feb. 17-22.

Rangeley native Rodney "the Mad Whittler" Richard will be doing chainsaw art demos at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17 at the base of Sawduster Chair. There will be a drawing for kids to win a carved bear cub and tiny whittled bunnies. There will also be hot chocolate. A repeat of the event will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20.

Carnival games, inflatable bounce houses, face painting and ice cream are just some of the offerings at Festival night on Tuesday, Feb. 19. The evening will start with a torchlight parade and fireworks on the Landing at 6:30 p.m., and then the activities move inside to the King Pine Room at 7 p.m. The magician Conjuring Carroll will be performing, and there will also be live music, a Chinese auction and Mad Science Demonstrations. Cost is $5 per person.

"America's hottest illusionist," Jason Bishop, will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21 in the King Pine Room. From his breathtaking double levitation to his Op-Art and plasma screen illusions, Bishop features stunning and original state of the art magic. Each show features award-winning sleight of hand, exclusive grand illusions, and even close-up magic projected onto a huge movie screen. The show is surprisingly funny and truly magical. Admission is $6 in advance (purchase at Guest Services) and $8 the day of the show.

If you stay for the weekend, a fantastic family outing is a Snowshoe Safari at 3:30 p.m. Saturdays at the Outdoor Center. A Kids' Night Out will be hosted 6-9 p.m. Saturday in the Mountain Magic Room with games, pizza and a movie. Reservations are required by calling 237-6804, and cost is $15 per child. And Family Turbo Tubing will be available 5-8 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 4-6 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Saturday (weather and conditions permitting).

Ski & Stay packages for the nights of Feb. 17-21, start at $119 per person and include lodging, daily lift tickets, health club privileges for condo/Inn guest or hotel spa privileges for hotel guests and a daily complimentary adult Perfect Turn ski clinic.
