Freddie Anderson was one of 10 instructors named in Ski magazine.

I've had the pleasure to meet Freddie Andersen. In my limited experience, I couldn't think of a better choice. I applaud SKI magazine for recognizing this woman.

The rumor around here is that Freddie has taught pretty much everyone in the capital district of New York to ski. I don't doubt it. My two boys started skiing with her crew at the Schenectady Ski School.

After the first day of their vacation week lesson, my wife positively gushed at how impressed she was by the instructors' enthusiasm and excitement for skiing and being out in the snow.

I confess to harboring a stereotype of teenagers as surley, petulent and self-absorbed. That is not so with these teenagers. Everything is kept fun and it quickly permeated through the students. Undoubtedly this reflects from Freddie, who is not the sort to just sign you up and sit behind the desk. She is right there in the learning area, keeping an eye on everything - never hesitating to participate.

Maple Ski Ridge, with it's 250'(?), of vertical is everything a young child needs to get their first taste of the Mountain Spirit that we all cherish. The entire place is truly reminiscent of days past. The groomer is parked right next to the lodge. There's even a dog who serves as the unofficial mascot - it kept my youngest daughter occupied while the boys were in their lessons. There is a real fire in the lodge and picnic lunches are the standard.

The mountain spirit I referred to above comes from people. I congratulate Freddie for sharing her mountain spirit with so many who are now better for it.
