A bit off the topic, but gas prices in California where really high at between $3.99 and $4.18 for REGULAR gas, yikes.

One thing to take into consideration is not only the price of gas, but people's wages as well. I don't have the exact figures, but in Poland as an example, the price of gas is about twice the amount of what it is here, yet people wages are about 25% of wages here.

It'd be interesting to see those numbers on a purchasing power parity basis (adjusted for Andyzee's point.

THomas Freidman (author of "The World is Flat"- good read, if you have time) was on The Daily Show on Monday- he recommends a $1 gas tax (on top of what's there already). Solves two problems- use the $1 to shore up Social Security, and it'll push gas prices high enough to force us to find something new. There's some good logic there. Short term pain, long term gain.

Don't forget to factor in the power of the respective currency. Right now the US Dollar is really weak.

Sorry TB, but I don't believe that to be a factor unless you're going to purchase gas in a country other then the one you work in.

Don't forget the huge VAT added on by many socialist countries. Norway's main export is oil and look at those prices. When I was there last summer the newspaper had a bottle of champagne and a headline of (translated loosely) "happy days" when the price of oil went over $70 a barrel. Yet they still pay the most. Oslo is the most expensive city to live in right now. Your looking at $10 for a pack of smokes. $8 or 9 for a pint of domestic beer. Forget about the imported Budweiser.

Not at all a problem.

It would take a lot of doing, but it would be interesting to see what relative gas prices are, pre tax, adjusted for PPP.

When you have a country that the government pretty much pays for everything they have to raise the money somehow. What's more important free education and healthcare for all or a huge tax on cigs and booze?

Oh, I agree. No complaints here from me. All the pretty blondes running around there help too. My wife has dual citizenship. It's nice to know I can get a quick work Visa if we ever decide to move there.
