I am truly surprised too and am GLAD there are other who understand to think for yourselves...dont accept everything you're told...

I always think for myself. My thought on your comment is, with all due respect, that people who think like you are in denial.

When I'm told by the overwhelming amout of scientist who know what they're talking about that the Earth is warming at an alarming rate and that much of the reason is caused by mankind I think I'd be a fool not to accept it.

Let's not attack.... Al Gore didn't claim he invented the interent and it makes me sick when conservatives blast him...
If it wasnt for Gores foresight - we may not be having a conversation on the net..

Uh...yeah...way to put me in my place.

When arguing its best to take quotes that help your position.

Man who said it earlier in this thread......."man" in general is pretty full of himself to think that we can control in any way this planet....

M

We do control alot of what goes on on top of the outer crust of the planet and since the Industrial Revolution and rampant population explosion we havn't done such a great job. We are always reactive never proactive.

Seriously. Everything stop thinking so much. It is very simple:

There is no way to tell if we are causing or accelerating global warming so just take the safe bet and try not to pollute the atmosphere. Eleminating fossil fuels and stopping polution can only have positive effects even if global warming has nothing to do with it.

I dont understand whats "cool"???? Im not attacking you..im attacking what you claim to believe in...which is what you do all the time to others.......this is DEBATE...obviously that is something you can't engage in without getting overheated..

I didnt see Greg say..."stop you 2"

Good point, I love to debate, but I always respect the opinions of others.

I think there are an equally overwhelming amount of scientists that agree with the flip of that...

I agree though we aren't doing anything to help the situation by continuing to do what we do...but that doesnt change the fact that, I beleive, this is an inevitable process that earth goes through...its done it before and will do it again...whether we stop or not.

Scientific "consensus" is never wrong?

Earth, wind, and fire that.

You can also gauge someone's intelligence by measuring their the size of their head.

Political forces never cloud scientific truths --- Copernicus and Galileo are living proof.

I think that the effects that global warming would have on skiing in New England would be:

1) Earlier thaws in the spring with later frosts and freezing weather in the fall.

2) Higher overnight temperatures - critical to snowmaking

3) Higher daytime maximum temperatures.

4) More rain than snow in the winter as we do not have the elevaton in most areas to overcome global warming in the short term.

5) A shorter more severe winter, with heavier snowfall in places until global warming reaches an equalibrium point.

I believe that a key factor in global warming would be the loss of permanent ice at the north pole. Some scientists have forecast the pole to be free of ice in the summertime by
as early as 2050, and open water reflects only 7% of the suns energy versus 90% for ice cover.

I have also read about the Artic reaching a sort of tipping point, at which time it cannot recover to it's frozen state, we may already have reached that point as the sea ice is not recovering as it should be in the winter time at the North Pole.

It must also be remembered at the same time that the north pole was as warm as south Florida is right now 55 million years ago, so the planet has been warmer by far than it is today.

I want to add that I am utterly baffled why this interesting topic has to turn political.

I don't see how you can be baffled. Dems on the Left, like Gore, have been historically considered (recent history) pro enviroment (Tree Hugers), while Reps on the right are considered pro business ( I ain't sigin no stinkin Kyopo agreement).

Maybe, but our current leaders are sure trying.

The Bush administration worked behind the scenes altering White House and G8 documents to downplay the impact of climate change. White House Council on Environmental Quality chief of staff Phillip Cooney repeatedly edited government climate reports. He used to work for the American Petroleum Institute and now he's left the White House to work for ExxonMobil.

Well put, Austin.......I don't know whether global warming is true or not, either. But, it's a good thing to try to minimize our impacts when possible. Here's to Ethanol 85 (or whatever that chemical brand is)..........

Totally baffled! Do folks really base all of their opinions on what their political affiliation tells them? When did independent thought get taken over by the herd mentality? I just don't look at people that way.

If you're telling me that people think the way they are told to think, then we are all nothing more than herds of cows chewing cud and farting out the party line.

Sad.

Wooo, I'm not telling you that at all. What I meant was that people vote for candidates who they consider like minded to themselves.

I never really cared for Gore (bag of hot air), but I voted for him in 2000 in large part because of his opinions on enviromental issues.

Since we both understand the defination of the word overwhelming what you wrote is mathmatically impossible.

how so????? I think the scientists that believe what I believe are the majority....therefore overwhelming.....

Look there is no right answer here...we have very little understanding of how this planet tkaes care of itself. From the texts ive read natural C02 production is the largest contributor to ozone depletion, can't stop that...

Hey "we" wanted an industrial revolution...we got it...how can we go backwards at this point? I'd be willing to try...but tell that to some other they might not agree soo much..

Anyway..this is a good debate and an important topic to say the least..

Actually a hybrid is fairly energy intensive when it's lifetime energy costs are taken into account. My Scion xB tops the list of cars that are least damaging to the planet. I take the train to work. I worked at the EPA. I could go on...

For the folks bashing Al Gore, Have you read his books? Or are you just parroting his critics?

I know it is a bad example....how bout I use cooking oil car instead....thats certianly environmentally friendly... :D
