For those that have been out in Northern New England, what should I be riding on my visits to WV/Loon/Cannon end of this week and on Sunday? Latest conditions report?

I had my skiies tuned this weekend cause the loaf is going to have a ton of firm snow in the am and soft corn snow as the day goes on. Loon was showing some signs of wear on Sunday. There is still alot of snow just pay attention. I would use my good skies 1 more weekend at Loon.
Cannon had some very obvious bear spots as I was driving by Sunday. I might grab the rock boards from what I saw. My info from the bar room view. Anyway I voted nice boards.

...do I recommend...  Will get out somewhere...either skiing or hiking. Maybe a mix, and might have the hiking boots by Sunday... Streams in mid-to-northern Maine are still way to ice-filled to do any paddling. The ones that are clearing will, on weekends, be Maine's version of #495 or #128.

Yep... got a new pair of those myself. I bought 'em to ski on, not to worry about. 8) Might try Loon myself this Sunday...

I voted for other...

They're all rock skis.

You're at the top of Paradise. They just opened it for the first time. There is 2' fresh powder. There are rockes that are 1'11". Y have your new skis on.

Do you take it... or head to the bottom to get your rock skis? :-?

 I vote you head to the bottom. I vote that I'm behind you with whatever pair of skis I have on, that day. They're now my rock skis.

I own two sets of skis right now that I use, a set of Rossi Bandits for all mountain skiing and a set of Rossi Axioms for powder, which I sometimes use in corn snow as they can be really fun and do a great job pushing the heavy snow around. I don't own rock skis so to speak. From what I've found, aside from ripping an edge off, there's nothing that a rock is gonna do to your ski that a little p-tex can't fix. Just ski cautious and be ready to take to the air quickly if an unseen bare spot pops up in front of you. I'm actually one of those people who enjoys the bare spots that come with spring skiing. I like the challenge of trying to negotiate them.

if i have new skis ill hit everything on groomers, crap skis ill go on terrian that looks horrible and do no damage, go figure :-? I would say good skis because in the spring it seems easier to aviod rocks and bare spots, like they seem to be huge spots early season it is ussually powder with no base, IMO

bring them both, duh. start out with the nice boards on the fully covered trails then decided whether the lesser covered trails require rock skis or not :) usually, spring conditions can be skied with good skis without worry. at least until there are only 5-6 foot wide sections turning around rocks, that might be a little hairy on the good boards ;)

I'm with the guys who say that rock skis are pointless. Unless you rip off an edge or smash your sidewall, then you can fix it all with ptex. At worst you'll need a weld. There's no reason to worry about your skis so much. You bought them to ski on - so do it.
