I'm not surprised that the Norwegians are doing this. They're quite good at Harnessing the wind. Here's a few pictures of something similar that I saw on the beach in Southern Norway last summer...this guy was on some sort of board. I've since seen it done here in the Rockaways.

Not sure what this sport is called either, but I see a bunch of regulars who do this near Chatham Light on Cape Cod. The guys I see at the Cape must be beginners. They are usually doing this in the shallow pools during low tide. It looks a whole lot more thrilling on the open water in the pics above.

It's called kiteboarding and it's an elegant and ecologically friendly way to get a good rush. This looks like a parasail of some sort, so the activity in the pictures may be called paraboarding. Same idea.
I know a few folks on Greenwood Lake who are really good at it...amazing to watch.
The one time I tried it I found I was expert at getting the kite to divebomb my head.

Kiteboarding is probably the most dangerous sport out there, with all the lines and everything you risk getting blown into. I have a 3 meter kite that is really fun to mess around with, ii usaually find a parking lot and pull myself on a skateboard behind the kite, or just go to the beach and jump around with it

I will be attempting kite skiing this winter with a 5 m2 foil.

I'll let everyone know how that goes. I'm sure it will be good for quite a few laughs.

Also known as snow kiting, or the general category of kiting sports is known as traction kiting. Appropriate name since I'll probably wind up in some sort of traction.

There's a wind sports shop in NH around Sunapee that specializes in this sort of sport.

FWIW, the kitewing is a different animal. It's a rigid wing which allows you to carve the air with control.

Yeah, the downside being you can only take advantage of surface wind, and need a fair amount of it blowing pretty steady to use it.

Traction kites can fly in much wider range of wind conditions.

That video was borderline paragliding.

That sums up the need for knowing how/when to depower.

Also makes a strong case for the new depowerable kites.

On the videos from the page that I started this thread with, the skiers, and boarders were using it going downhill to create their own wind.

When you have upslope winds, you can avoid liftlines too ;)

Now THAT is a great thought!

Imagine the looks of bewilderment as you slide uphill on your skis with your kite to the summit.
