Hey check this out... my new job uses Harvard Pilgrim. I was looking through the book and discover they offer a discount on AMC memberships. That's pretty cool.

Wonder if they have a discount on vitamin "I" to go with it. :)

I'm not renewing my AMC membership.
I am renewing my NYNJTC membership.

The trail conference deserves my money.
AMC is just a lobby with overpriced accomodations.

That's my impression anyway. Perhaps I'm wrong, but since my impression is based on the newsletter they send me, I don't think so.

I'm hoping the discounted section just means less support for the lobbiests in Washington, as well as less leftist propaganda I'll recieve in the mail. :) If I knew that the whole $37 was going to trail maintenance rather than political ventures, then I'd gladly give it.

Aside from their emphasis on lobbying, which I hate in all forms, I joined them to have groups to hike with. Problem is that I've never bothered going on an AMC hike. There is an arrogant tone to the entries in their schedule which drives me nuts. You cannot hike with us if X and Y. It just doesn't sound like fun.

Being a New Hampshire Chapter member, I find it just the opposite...at first (nearly 20-years a go) we enjoyed a few of their hikes and then moved on to our own thing...I believe their group activities for hikers and snowshoe enthusiasts are great for novices, those not familiar to the region and those who do not have regular hiking partners and need to go...

Although I must admit some of the "trip leader wannabe’s" are a bit over the top with their name-dropping and safety suggestions...

As for their politics, I have no complaints... I believe their collective cause & efforts are noble and respectable…

Yes they do indeed have very good intentions.
But that doesn't change the fact that they're essentially a lobby.
Power trip may be exactly what I was thinking with the hikes that bothered me: "Even if there's no ice, you cannot come on this hike if you don't have crampons." Hey buddy it's not your park.
