Thinking about a helmet but there seems to be so many to choose from. Of course, my first thought is a Giro. Any recommendations on what to get and where to get it? I am a recreational skier and snow boarder.

Also, what about sizing? Is it better to get it a little bigger or should it just fit right?

I have a Giro Talon and love it . Its a full helmet with vents very comfy fit . I 've had Boeri's and Brikos in the past but this is by far the best . Giro also has many other cool styles if you want a shorty .

Do NOT get a helmet TOO LARGE-- get fit so it is snug but NOT tight and you''ll be good to go

I ski in the Northern 'Dacks and Tremblant where it can be extreme

i can fit a full balaclava and special breath/warmer mask and goggles on with my Talon with no problem , Be SURE to take your goggles with you when you try helmets on to assure good goggle / helmet compatibility

have fun

You should disregard any one specific recommendation. Go to a shop, try a bunch on (with your goggles), and get the one that fits your head correct. Buying a helmet based on suggestion is just as bad as buying a boot without trying one on, especially if you do not know your size. You want it to fit slightly snug to just a hair tighter than just right when buying because they pack out quick. You definitely do not want any thing that feels even slightly too large.

Agree with river, you need something that fits you. My fave however, is Giro Fuse. Other than fit, the most important thing to me is vents. With regards to sizing, do not get on too big or you you may need it when your head swells from a fall in which you helmet fell off! :) What I like to do when fitting, is, put the helmet on, get the straps in place so it fits good and the helmet its comfortable. Then, I try to simulate the helmet getting hit from different angles. I'll push or hit from the right side, then the left, front, back, etc........ If you fall, you want the helmet to stay on your head,

Oh, if you use my method get ready for strange looks as your standing in the store hitting yourself in the head. But, hey, the people giving you strange looks will not be accompanying you to the hospital. :)

Get even stranger looks when my wife is looking for a helmet and I start hitting her upside the head. :)

<Rant On>........ The one thing I can't stand is when I see parents buying helmet for their kids and saying they want bigger ones since the kids will grow into them! I could understand the cost of having kids, but they're not going to grow into anything if they bust they're heads open! .............<Rant Off>

I agree with the above advice; go try on a bunch to see what fits you best. Don't think that all the models from a particular manufacturer will fit the same either. For example; my understanding is that the Giro G9 has a much different fit than the G10. The G10 is my current helmet and I love it.

EDIT: Get one that fits just right, don't get one too big. If you're worried about needing to fit extra layer under it then don't. The helmet will keep your head warm in most weather, and if it doesn't then you should still be able to fit a thin balaclava in there.

This season I went from a XL Boeri helmet to a M Giro G10 and couldn't be happier. The Boeri never seemed too big, I guess there's a discrepancy in sizing between manufacturers.

yep, just like boots, gotta try before you buy

Some love Giro, I didn't find one that fit me well. Marker was the best fitting brain bucket for my dome and is what I use.

There definitely is inconsistency in Giro sizing. My Giro Fuse is a M... Brian's G10 in M is HUGE on my head. I don't remember what size my Boeri was but for some reason, I'm thinking L. Best bet is to try them on in a shop, even if you end up buying them online for a discount.

Another one here for going to a ski shop and trying them on. But, I do have to say Giro is a tough helmet! Never ever has my helmet been 'utilized', but today was the day as I f-ed up a landing and hit my head pretty damn hard on the fall. Minus shooting white stars for a little bit I was fine!
