I got my head carver lights and bindings with that extra plate thingee (I am not very technical) for $269.00. I have a friend who sells skis out of his basement. Does all the ski shows. Bruce Hardy, Hardy's Ski Emporium in Wakefield, MA. Gotta love Bruce!

Just came back from two days at Cranmore. It was some of the best skiing I have had in years. My two boys had a ball (2 and 4) The 4 year old had a lesson on Sat then skied the remainder of the day with me on the magic carpet as well as on the lift. For only having a few trips under thier belts these two boys did very -very well. My 2 year old is starting to master a snowplow with the assistance of the worm on his ski tips. My 4 year old is quite confidant and really can make some nice snowplow turns. This is what I have allways wished for and now have begun the experience of sking with my own two kids as I did with my father when I was a child in VT.

Enough of the life event stuff.. I tried the Five star Volkl's this weekend as I was able to demo these up in NH. I liked the ski..but they only had the 175 cm and it felt a bit short. Granted I only took about 5 runs on my own at my pace, they still felt a bit squirelly at higher speeds 25mph+/-(maybe this is a length issue or maybe it is me getting used to shaped ski technology/style?). Like I said I loved the atomic Beta Carve GS ski (but this ski only really performed at 40mph + and I think I will be a slow poke with my kids for the next few years. I liked the Volkls's but did not love them at speed-but they really turned easy when you hit the sweet spot-alllmost throwing you up in the air through the turn progression. I have seen so many skis and every shop says these "such and such" are the best out there etc etc etc .........
Can I have a few more ideas to demo from the group as you all are skiing on these and other skis presently....most times it seems as shop tech's or sales people are pushing the "ski of the week' to get a sale.

I would like to come away from the forumn next week with a few sets of skis to be on my demo list for the rest of the season and then maybe pick up a pair at seasons end for discount. Maybe something like the Volkl ????? with more stability ??????? What are the Solomon skiis all about-they seem popular-they look a bit radical to say the least. Silver and blue color i think...

If the 5 star felt squirelly, try the 6* . I'd also try the 4*. I liked the 4* and 6* but really did not like the 5* when I demoed.

re: new skis.....

Hi gtfearons,
...a few off the top o' my head:
Head RX8 FTi Railflex(66mm)
Volkl P50/60 GS Racing, (*try their "724 AX3" since you would have enjoyed a longer radius turn than the 5-Star)
Elan Mantis M10
K2 XP
Dynastar SkiCross 10
(*Their 05' "Legend 8000"(80mm) is on the racks...a stiffer Intuitive)

$.02.....

Ask five skiers what skis to buy and get eight answers! haha (Just jesting! )

I demo'd several pair and found the Rossi T-Power Viper's worked best for me. Mine are 160cm, just a bit shorter than myself at 5'4". Guess I'm the runt in this pack of big boys weighing in at only 160lbs. (Never thought I'd think that weight is light. I've gained more than a few pounds over the years too!) Actually the shop owner picked out several pairs for me to try after asking a few questions. My height, weight and how do I like to ski. I'm a fall line skier, like to make as many quick-short carving turns as possible, rarely ski GS style, and don't like to ski fast. By the afternoon I found my skis. Hardpack skis, anyway. They stink in powder, but that's another story. I expanded my quiver with a pair of Black Diamond Crossbow's* last year.

Yup, what works for one skier, gives another grief, so demo as many as you can and forget all our advice. (Kiddin'. Sort of.) You'll find the ski that's right for you.

Jimme :p

* I guess technically these are Tele skis, but do fine for my alpine style skiing. Atomic as well as other manuf.'s have some awesome Tele skis that are much cheaper than thier alpine counterparts. Might be worth a look and demo.

If you decide to go with an all mountain ski (which I think you should based on your post), demo the K2 Axis XP. I demo'd these at Jackson Hole a couple of weeks ago and fell in love with them. Very wide but suprisingly responsive and ROCK solid at speed. I tried them mostly in the groomers as the off-piste stuff was pretty rock hard that day. They seemed to "make" it through the hard moguls ok but I couldn't see "bashing" through the soft bumps with them. Though, this doesn't appear to be what you want to do anyway. I'm sure they'd be great on powder due to the width. If you're into versatility with speed, these could be the ticket.

I'm on three year old Atomic 9.22 Beta Rides at the moment. Not sure what they're called today. Same idea as the Bandit, Xscream, etc. They do everything well but not great. Expect some desintegration at high speeds but nothing alarming.

Good luck & glad you're back to the sport!

try bumping that 5* demo up another 10cm, i think you might have went to small... especially considering you're coming from really long boards. volkl P60 would probably have more stability at speed i would think, especially the GS model as already noted. pretty much every ski manufacturer has a top of the line GS board, i think that's what you're looking for. i'm partial to volkl myself.

everyday I come back I get more and more cool info. Thanks alot. I may demo for the rest of season and find a cheap pair of get some next year. Not sure what to do. I also have a great offer on some ATOMIC GS skiis that are brand new, but have not skiied them or anything like them. Beta carve 9.2 carbons...only 100 bucks and never been out of the wrapper.

Bob, I think I may be in the same boat as you both as I am coming out of the straight ski world looking for a few good rides on many an "all mountain" ski. I have found that every ski I have demo'd have been drastically different from one another. The old days you could try a few different skis/brands and not see a heck of alot of difference. These shaped skis are really quite impressive in the ride and handling traits. Do what I am doing.....demo demo demo. You will find the right ski and then just buy it as we know these things are not cheape either.......
