Hi everyone ~

I have been lurking around here for the past month or two, and thought I would throw up my 1st post.

I am 38, and started skiing in the early 80's when I was about 14 years old, completely by accident. I grew up in the city, and a buddy of mine had an older cousin who brought him skiing once, and he loved it and wanted me to join him. He told me all about it and we set up a trip to Nashoba Valley - and I still remember the triumph of snow plowing down an intermediate trail by the end of the day and that great sense of accomplishment I felt.

That was it, I was hooked. After that I could not get enough. I think I was the only kid in the North End with a ski rack attached to my car all winter long. If I could get no one to ski with me, I would happily go alone for night skiing at Wachusett. I had good skis (Dynamic VR20's the best GS skis I could afford at the time), and could ski with anyone on the mountain. I was not a technician, I was more of a madman - but there was not a run that I would not attempt..

Anyway...

Fast forward to the last 15 years - school, marriage, work - I think I may have skied 6 times total. Last year at some tiny place in upstate NY and the year before that at a small resort in VT called Queche I think.

But this year for Xmas my family bought me gift cards for Stratton Mountain, where a buddy and I used to ski at all the time in the past. My wife contacted my buddy, who now lives in Jersey, and he said would be exited to go back to Stratton with me.

We are booked for this Weds-Thurs-Fri on the ski for free deal - total of $167 each for ski and lodging...also in the last few weeks I bought new (to me) equipment...(I only rented shaped skis the last two trips - hero skis I call them, becuase I was an instant hero using them.)

170cm Rossignol Energy 10.1 slalom skis
Marker M31 bindings
Solomon Symbio 500 boots
Ghetto poles
Bolle goggles
Columbia ski pants

Between watching the olympics last month and warren miller tv on OLN, I am all fired up to hit Stratton again.

Anyway, my question...

Our ski and stay deal is for 2 lift tickets each - but I want to ski a 1/2 day on Weds to get my legs under me again...Is it wrong to offer $10 to folks in the parking lot for their lift ticket if they are leaving for the day? Just snip them off with some wire cutters, or is this a bad thing to do? $47 for a 1/2 day ticket is a bit steep, but I will pay it happily if I have to.

Thanks - I have already gathered great info from this site.

Ethically shady, potentialy hazardous, and bad in the long run- every $1 they don't get now will be another $.50 added to next year's ticket prices.

Plus, you don't want to start your vacation getting thrown off teh mountain. Spend teh extra $20 or so and buy a 1/2 day ticket.

oh yeah- welcome to the boards. Sounds like your skiing experience is similar to many of us. Especially the "madman" bit. Marc, I'm looking at you.

I personally wouldnt do it...it's just wrong IMO. Stratton does not use wire wickets for their tickets. They use plastic bands.

Are you kidding???

It's theft.. And you can get in big trouble for it...
There's better ways to save cash legally on lift tickets. Just post here when your going somewhere and maybe someone can help you out..

No way! I wouldn't do it! First off, it's wrong and is actually theft. Secondly, most large places like Stratton have cameras all over the place, including their parking lots and you stand a hugh risk of being caught. If you are caught, that's the end of your ski trip and probably some litigation coming your way. See if you can get the half day added to your package legitimately.

I've done it in the past...mostly when I was a struggling student. If you're careful and do it incognito style..you'd probably be o.k. But, Vermont does have a statute called theft of services...but i'm sure its rarely used. :) At this point, with a wife, kid and considering the good deal you got...might want to pay for it. Or...If it were me...I'd drive the 15 mins and ski bromley for $25.

I agree it's theft of services and there are warnings against doing this on the back of alot of lift tickets. I do not even stretch my sons age at a place where he is free for age 5 even though he is barely 6 years old. Most ski areas are not making a killing profit wise off of you, so look at it from their prospective, especially after the tough winter that we just went through.

I see tickets being resold in the parking lot sometimes... angers me a bit.
I do speak up and it makes lots of friends. jk
The resorts need the ticket sales so we can come back next year. I have an ethics isssue with this.

someone already mentioned it but i'll say it again. As far as stratton is concerned, its a mute point because they dont use metal wickets. You cut the zip tie and poof, that's it. As far as the ethics, i would never do it now, but when i was attending castleton, we used to do it all the time. struggling college students find ways to ski no matter how shady it may have been.

Like others, I have a real integrity issue with what you are thinking.

I have a similar situation to loafer89. My son is 13 but he could easily still pass for 12; I'd never, however, get him a youth ticket at places where teen tickets are sold.

Pay for the 1/2 day ticket; piece of mind is more than worth the $30 or so that you would save.

You should offer them a couple of hundred bucks for their ski jacket that happens to have a lift ticket attached to it.

Ok guys, you convinced me - I was 90/10 against buying someone else's ticket to begin with.

I have no issue coughing up the cash, although I do like the ski jacket idea :)

I will look into Bromley as well - If it is $25, it will be like having lunch and a few beers apres ski for free compared to Stratton - It will also give me an oppurtunity to experience a mountain that I never skied before...

Peace and chicken grease,
