I was supposed to be joined by my friends from S&W but they both bagged out me after having a long day in the shop on Saturday and an excuse of not having any hiking shoes. Oh well, they missed out on a great day and I was able to move around without any issues.
I reached the lot at 7:30 and started hiking at 7:45. Hardly anyone was there but then again the nice kids were having brunch with their moms, leaving the rest to us. I made Hojo's at 9 and headed over to Hillman's. Again, I was the first one in after fighting the brush to the bottom of the run. After swapping hiking attire for skiing, I was joined by to others and we startrd climbing. I continued to climb on skiers right until I was shut out by a rock band about 3/4 up. I called this high point and skied from there. Conditions were sweet. 2" of soft on a hard base, carves all the way to the top of the snowfield entrance.
The lower snowfield was great. No bumps and tons of open lines thru the brush. I boot packed back up the the entrance and finished off Hillman's, gathering my stuff and headed back to Hojo's.
I threw on my hikers and headed up into the bowl. I was all happy to see my friends, the Klings, patroling this weekend so talked with them for the Beta on the bowl and told them about Hillman's conditions. After lunch I decided to do Chute first as its one of the shorter climbs.
Okay, this is my stupid people rant:
Dogs can climb higher and steeper than they can decend. Don't bring your dog into the runout of a chute other people are trying to ski. Go somewhere else!
If you are hiking and choose to glissade down the Chute, A: Take off your damn crampons so you don't spiral fracture your legs, B: Learn to use your axe! If you don't know to do those two things then stay home until you do.
Don't hang out in the crux move of the chute for 20min. trying to move 10' to the side when the shadows are growing.
Anyway, despite the stupid people, Chute was great to ski. It was intimidating looking down from the top but once you dropped in it was sweet. Next on the list, Left Gully.
Nice hike with some steep 50+ pitches on the climbers right. If you want to get your steep on with less exposure, this is a good choice. After the top pitch, the rest was nice, big soft bumps the floor.
The folks I was sitting next to hooked me up with a cold beer which topped off the day. Thank you very much, who ever you were! I swapped out equipement and headed down to Hojos where I.....
Got to watch a dog fight on the deck!!! Nothing serious but it added to the drama for the day. 1 1/2hrs later I was down in the lot packing up at 4 o'clock. Not a bad way to finish off the year.
