For Sugarbush checkout Golden Lion, Hyde-Away, Whitehorse, here is info on all the lodging in the Mad River Valley http://www.madrivervalley.com/vermont/lodging/index.asp

There is a Budget Motel in Barre, not one of their nicest looking properties and the Econolodge in Montpelier, definately not one of their nicest properties, I went by a couple of weeks ago, more construction but they had a sign by the road that said they were open. The Budget is about 45 min away, the Econolodge 40 min

If u don't mind the 40 minute drive, the Hilltop Inn in Barre is decent and inexpensive. Indoor pool, but take a shower after wards. The Hospital uses the pool for Physical Therapy sessions. Never gotten sick just a lot of chlorine. The Non-smoking rooms are much nicer than the smoking rooms as well renovated about 8 years ago. Newer mattresses. Can be as cheap as $59. a night to no more than $79. if booked ahead of time. Good for Families or Single men. I would not impress a girlfriend here. The Budget and Econolodge in Barre/Montpelier are not winners!!!
Or in the valley, The Garrison has a pool and is near Ellen and Mad River Glen. Older place as well, but the rates are good. Condos and hotel rooms.

+2 on the Golden Lion. Right at the bottom of the access road to Sugarbush.

This time of year the SR Grand practically gives away rooms with a lift ticket.

There are a long list of options that I might recommend before the Garrison....

For Jay, I've stayed at the Newport City Motel, pretty cheap, about a 20 minute drive. Also at the Snowline which is the closest to Jay's driveway - it's pretty much just a motel and a bit pricey for that, but they include a good, sit down breakfast and are so close. I've also stayed at Alpine Haven condos about 3 miles from Jay towards Montgomery. They are not luxury but they are clean, have good kitchens and gas fireplaces and a 1 bedroom with pull out couch in the living room was around around 100 a night 2 years back.

For the thread audience, I can suggest at Killington the Killington-Pico Motor Inn, they have a nice hot tub, and free breakfast included for around $ 100 peak season, less early and late season.

The others would have been the other forementioned. The Golden Lion is nice new mattresses and the hot tub is nice at the end of the day. I also stay sometimes out at the Best Western in Waterbury. It has pool and hot tub. But is more expensive in season. I stay there early or late season, but is a good option if you want to go to Stowe as well or maybe Jay.

The Waitsfield Motor Inn ( I believe that is the name) is not listed on the Sugarbush website links. It is lower priced, but has thin walls, get a room upstairs!

Slidebrook lodge is on German flats and if I was young and had no kids this is where I would stay. Bar in the place and hot tub!

Just my two cents on places I have stayed on the cheap! If u can call it cheap. Also the Garrison has a grill on the deck they will let u use, but the mattress could use some help and ur not going to have a 36 inch flat screen. The TV might still have a dial.
So, it is a matter of perspective and price, and what ur looking for.

If u go and post on Skimrv.com, and ask about the ski houses there are few of those that if they have open rooms will take u on a weekend as well if the members are not there. They will give u Saturday night dinners with your room rate and breakfast I think. and are decent price. I have not stayed at any of those though.

I used to stay at the Bayview lodge in Newport vt when skiing Jay. The rooms were big and clean and were perfect for extended stays.

Your probably thinking of Paul's place, the Waitsfield Farm Motor Inn across from the Big Picture?

If you click the link in my first post www.madrivervalley,com most all of the valley's lodging is listed

Royalty inn in Gorham NH for Sunday River was cheap and decent. The pool is nice. Avoid "Crabby Jack's" restaurant. It's nice striking distance to Wildcat too.
I'm not sure about closer to SR, I stayed at Royalty last time because it was much less expensive.
