Any dog owners have any experience with training your dog to not run out of the yard? I have two labs who are by and large good dogs, but my training them has fallen apart when it comes to them staying in the yard.
My two labs are 6 and 4 years old.
I have a 2.5 acre lot, my house is set about 100' back from the road. Normally, I take the dogs out leashless - I will let them out of the porch in the morning to pee and then I normally come out the garage and play fetch with them afterwards.
The problem is that when I have someone coming down the road; or th eneighbors across the street are out, they get so excited they run to the people, barking like crazy. it sounds ferocious but they would never hurt a fly; still I don't like (and I'm sure my neighbors don't like) the dogs running up to them barking like crazy. I may have also scarred the next door neighbor's 4 year old from ever liking dogs.
I have been taking them out on the leash more but I'm stuck with how to get their impulse in control. It's just so exciting for them to see people they freak out. Ironically, I exposed them a lot to people - I used to take the dogs to stop and shop and just sit ouside with them on the leash while people come and go. I would take them to classes, and to friends houses. Been working on their impulse control (like making sure I go through doors first and walk in front of them).
THey also freak out in the window if someone walks by, barking like crazy.
Any ideas? I may end up resorting to getting a wireless pet containment system but I don't like the idea of shock collars and would prefer you know, training my dogs appropriately, it's just been very difficult to crack this one habit of theirs.
