How did I get started?

I laced on my hand-me-down boots, stepped outside into the fresh snow, sank up to my nuts. I strugled to snap the cable binding down, firmly pushed off with my bamboo poles, slid about 25', went over a 5' retaining wall and crashed. About a half hour later, I managed to get back to the house. The lessons sounded like a better idea at that point.

My wife kept after me to go, I told her that I would go and sit in the bar and watch. When I got there, she had aranged for a ticket and rentals. I went up on the bunny run and went down after falling a few times. I finally figured it out(sort of) and had a ball. That was feb of 1999. After that, I have been hooked ever since.

Wow...I forgot all about this experience I had as a kid with a pal...and his gear that happened to fit. Maybe I forgot becuase the event was less than memorable.

What got me really started was my militray assignment to Vicenza Italy in 78. 1 hr from the Dolomites....and a slow training schedule all winter long..and a vague requirement for winter mobiity we totally took advantage of. I rented gear fromt he on-base rec ctr. $2 for boots...$2 for skis/poles. Pick em up Wed after lunch, return them Friday before lunch...ski all day Thursday.

Three years of that, two Thanksgivings in St Moritz....aw yeah. I bought gear my 3rd year there...Nordica boots right from the factory...210 Kniesel's E-frickin Gad! Salomon 555 bindings and after-market ski-stoppers.

Great memories.
