Prolly one of the most ragged on mountains out there, but still deliveries in terms of terrain. Posers beware...

Can't wait for D to start posted pics like this:

Got the door-to-door down to about 2 hours. Looking forward to heading back this season. Finally spent some quality time on 'Purna last season. It seems the place always humbles me...

It's one of my favorite areas, I've never understood how it gets put in the same boat with Mountain Creek in many people's opinion. I like the way they actually let most of the mountain bump up, and the fact that most of the terrain is of the steep variety.

Plus, you don't usually have to worry about snow cover too much when they can do things like this:

With that said, I'd still like to see improved snowmaking on the West Side, and some of the other trails as well (Heuga/Drop-off, ESD/Milky Way and the upper part of Hunter One). And they need the West Side expansion badly.

What is most impressive about Hunter is how well they organize the 30 minute lift lines on weekends. Fascinating.... :puke:

No really, pretty cool mountain and the snow making system is insane. I just haven't made the effort to ski in mid season so I haven't had a chance to ski the steeper runs cause they aren't normally open in November and April. The hill gets too busy on most weekends, but what can you do.

That is a cool shot and a wicked good PR tool. How many other ski areas can get such a clear shot of a majority of the mountain so easily?

Yeah, I think that's why it gets lumped in with places like mountain creek, unfortunately. The weekend crowds are pretty horrendous. That said, it's definitely a good mountain... we keep meaning to take a weekday and head up there so we can appreciate it without having to battle what feels like the entire state of NJ.

Yeah, even the quad isn't usually too bad...the only thing that tends to be bad is the Z in the first hour the West Side's open, they don't even bother putting up lines, so it becomes chaos.

i always hit the Z when it opens then hit the F for a couple then back to the Z... unless the Y is open.. And it NEVER has a line.. Even on a holiday weekend you can ski on...
But it only services expert terrain so most people don't hit it..

Hunter is truly an awesome place to ski. Many other big name ski areas in the Northeast are truly boring compared to Hunter. For example Mt Snow and Stratton ski areas to name a few. You say it hasn't snowed in weeks. No problem. If you hit it right and watch the snowmaking report you can hit some awesome fresh man made powder on your favorite trails. Usually very cold nights means lots of man made powder the next day.

Some of the Lodges at Hunter offer some excellent and very reasonable mid-week packages that can't be beat. Many of these packages don't require a reservation weeks in advance.

Everyone thinks you have to go 3 hours further north for good ski conditions. The good thing for the locals is folks that drive to Vermont keep thinking that.

Seriously the Catskills need a midweek overnight ski and ride package marketing and advertising plan. The quick two day ski package with one overnight stay may have the best chance to improve Catskill market share that can fill those empty midweek chair lifts. A two day package is a spontaneous item that could be marketed to anyone at any income level in the NYC, CT, NJ, and PA areas that has a busy schedule. A radio advertisement at the right time when it just so happens they are not busy at work for a few days.

My nephew in NJ and his neighbors have a busy work and family schedule working for ESPN and other large corporations. They do a two day ski package at Hunter Mountain every year.

Yes, Hunter is horribly crowded on weekends...don't stop there, keep driving to Vermont.

30-60 minute lift lines.

dmc has some pictures that show the overflow crowds there. Horrendous!

Honestly folks, Hunter is no more crowded than any other ski resort on a weekend. Learn how to ski the mountain and you'll rarely wait more than 5 minutes. Problem is, you'll have to ski on all that steep terrain.

I think the crowded lift line image comes from the lifts that serve the limited intermediate terrain there like B lift.

Hunter has a legit 1600 vert...Windham says they do but according to my Avocet..it's about 1300...Lately I visit Belleayre more due to the lack of crowds..and cheap tickets'
