I can't wait for this crap weather to end and I can start making trips up there. Would be nice to hit some powder days this season up there as well. I missed most of them.

Personally, all the Catskill resorts should pump up their vertical a few feet every year. Before you know it, all the Catskill ski resorts will have 2000 feet of vertical like Vermont ski areas. Only the locals will know the truth. Shh, the tourists don't need to know anything. We just force them to ski lower K27 and West Side and they will only wish it was less vertical.
Hunter could theoretically* add another 800 vertical feet, since the summit of Hunter Mountain rises about that much above the summit of Colonel's Chair (the home of Hunter Mountain Ski Bowl).
*Theoretically because that's the geography. Realistically, the chances of the ski area ever expanding to the summit of Hunter are just about zero or less. It'd be great, but it's just not happening.
they are going to gain a good amount of VERT when they finally get around to expanding to the sign out box near the X trail cut. not sure how much probably 150 feet.. I'd have to topo it..
Dmc, where are you referring to? (I know where the X-cut is, just not sure what you're referring to by the sign out box.)
I guess I was wrong about ski lift installs don't lie.
Check out the vertical for Superchief Install at Belleayre of 1138 vertical feet.
Now check out the replacement lift Super Chief Express Belleayre Super Chief express vertical 1338 . Where did that extra 200 feet come from.
Must be a typo. They got the 38 correct.
the sign out bow is at the very top of X... It's on the path to access the summit of the real Hunter where the firetower is..
Also notice that the Superchief Express is 166 feet longer than the original superchief. I never rode the original Superchief so I don't know if they moved the base downhill a little and/or the top up a little more to get the extra length and possibly vertical.
Ah, this might be breaking the "stash" rule, but is X still skiable, or have they let it grow in?
That's true, but since even if the lift were going straight up, a 166ft extension isn't going to give you 200ft more in vertical feet, so I'd say it's a typo.
Since the advent of google maps and the moutain bike trails it's lost it's secrecy.. Plus you can see it from the road...We tried to protect it but it's no use now..
X is skiable part way down from the top to the mountain bike entrance but quickly becomes over grown - so it's not really worth the hike..
I hate Hunter. It is way to crowded with new yorkers and people from jersey. It always gets way to icy and moguled. belleayre and windham are way better mountains. You guys can stick to your crappy over crowded mountain.

DMC I agree with you. What is the word in the local bars ond on the streets of Hunter. Would the Hunter locals support or oppose Hunter Mountain Ski Area extension to the the top of Hunter Mountain not far from the Fire Tower? Of course this assumes the state would ever transfer or lease the land to Hunter Mountain Ski Bowl, which is a tad big assumption. The state has done forever land swaps before. It could happen. When it comes to adding verticle... I'd rather see vert get added on the top of the mountain then the bottom where it's generally flatter.. At least in the Catskills...

Darn, I only got a couple runs down that part of the West Side last year, and never got around to checking it out again. (I've skied it once).
Hunter acutually owns land that on the shoulder of Hunter and thats what we talk about when we refer to West Side expansion.
There will never be developement in the ravine on Hunter Mountain facing the ski area - I'm actually against it.. The forest is way to fragial to support trails.
Interesting news is everyone, from every town(Hunter town,Hunter Village,Jewit) in the area, agrees with the new concept for drawing water form the creek..
The plan calls for drawing water from the creek by Demming road. And establishing another snowmaking pond somewhere over there(West Side)...
I'm seeing things leading to Westside Expansion...
