I want my first trip to MRG to absolutely rock-should I go this Saturday or not?

The first indications were that the niar avoided MRG but reading their site indicates that the lower part of the mountain got wet. Now we factor in that it would be on a Saturday that begins a vacation week and it's supposed to be quite cold. I live in Southeastern NH and can get to icy slopes with much less driving. Your take?

GO!

Most of the great stuff is atop anyways.
Monday's rain may not miss the top :(
It will be a wee bit chilly on Saturday. Just remember to let the dog in ;)

my midfats are packed, I'm heading to NVT in 9 hours....

If you absolutely need your first day there to be epic happy go nuts, then Saturday may not be the day. By Mad River's high standards, this snow conditions report is amazingly read between the lines, IMO:

MadRiverGlen.com said:
The top half of the mountain skied like an amazing powder day while the bottom half got a little tricky as things got heavy. The temperatures have dropped a bit, so the cooler air will eventually dry out the snow. That said, things may be a little firm on the lower mountain as we get the day started but that should change as the day goes on. Up higher, however, is likely to be phenomenal all day.

If you keep expectations in line with that report, you will have a good time. Not epic but it still could rock. Be ready for firm bumps on most of the mountain with perhaps some softer nice snow above the mid-station.

The softer snow went down past the mid station today. Basically from just above Waterfall down is where the sketchiness line seemed to be to me. It wasn't really bad, it was just way worse than the good stuff up top. Most of the good trails had a lot of patches of ice on the backside of bumps, but it wasn't too bad and certainly managable. A lot of it was still covered, but it'll be a bit more skied off by Saturday.

I say go for it, I had a blast there today!

We have different subjective opinions of not really bad, lol. Ice on the backside of the bumps is sub-par conditions to me, but that just shows you subjectiveness of opinion and the need to know the preferences of the person reviewing conditions.

That's why included as many details as possible, so that one could draw their own conclusion. ;)

For me the conditions were awesome. I don't get to ski in that much powder very often, even if it was almost all tracked out and over some questionable base in spots.

You can check out my pics from the day too (I didn't take any pics of the sketchiness down low ;) ):

On saturday everything will freeze solid. It will be a bitchingly cold day with some nasty winds. Icy moguls are just not that much fun. I'd skip it and wait for better conditions.

I was there also and the conditions were great. The ice on the back side of the moguls was easily avoidable and I consider normal for trails that are not groomed. I only noticed the ice on the steeper blacks, not on any of the blues or Fall Line.

In order for this to happen you first have to have a warm spell. Everything was already frozen Yesterday so the cold should not effect conditions. Sunday night is another story.

Since my requirement is that this will be a stellar day, I think I'm going to postpone it. Good spring skiing option if I can't catch a powder day?

If you are waiting for a better day on a weekend good luck. I think you could be waiting a long time for conditions better than these unless you can take off a random day at any time right after a storm.

There's great stuff on the lower mountain too. Lower Antelope, Lynx, Liftline, Glades. Even Canyon is fun when the bumps are good. Sure the upper mountain is awesome, but the lower is equally as good IMHO.

I haven't skied MRG in many years. I don't know why, I always really liked the place. I remember there used to be 30+ minute lines for the single on weekends. Is that still the case?

The beauty of MRG? You can always show up and get a first hand look at the mountain and a locals opinion that day. If it's no good, Sugarbush is always an excellent alternative only 5 minutes away.
