Ideas for a 2 day trip

I'm looking to go up to VT/NH/ME for next sunday/monday, staying one night in between with a friend. I've been skiing in the east before, but now that I have to plan an itinerary (I'm looking to hit two resorts), I'm lost. I want to drive up sunday morning, ski that day, sleep that night, ski the next day, and return home that night.

What I'm looking for are two resorts that are relatively close together so as to not be too much of a hassle to drive between, but that are big/good enough to warrant a long drive and an overnight stay. I was thinking killington/sugarbush, but having never been to either before I'm unsure. Any ideas/thoughts?

need more information, specifically in regards to what type of trails and snow conditions you like to ski and your preference on whether you enjoy fully functional resorts vs. no frills areas. also, how long of a drive are you considering? it's an hour between killington and da bush, iirc.

sugarbush/mrg combo obviously comes up, you can't get two (three actually) big ski mountains any closer than the mad river valley. you could do one day at bush north then another at bush south, or do both at the bush sunday and mrg on monday.

saddleback/sugarloaf option would be interesting if you don't mind the drive up that way, though sugarloaf could honestly be two days in itself, especially if it's good snow.

stowe/smuggs while right next to each other physically are quite a drive apart, but could be an option.

one of my favorite one-two punches is cannon, nh and burke, vt. just under an hour apart. cannon sunday then loon monday might be a good option as they are only 10 minutes apart.

oh man, the list goes on and on! i could seriously list the possibilities for another 15 minutes, suffice to say they are not limitless but very plentiful.

Sugarbush/mrg sounds interesting, especially since I've always meant to get up to mrg. The shorter the drive the better, obviously, but anything within reason is possible. We ski all types of terrain, and I'm just as comfortable in a double black gladed area as I am on a groomed blue cruiser (for the most part, anyway).

And since I'm used to west coast skiing (i'm spoiled that way) I really don't want to tantalize myself by going on and on about the snow conditions I like. I'll take anything that isn't a sheet of ice. :D

If you choose the The Cannon Loon Combo, I would suggest the Parker Motel, Very low price nice people. Half way between both resorts 10 min either direction. I would ski Loon on Monday Cannon on Sunday. Loon will be mobbed on Sunday and fairly busy Monday. www.parkersmotel.com

If your friend is female, and you have a few bux to spend, and you want to impress her, go to Bretton Woods and stay at the Mount Washington Hotel. You can get a package that includes the lodging and lift tickets. Then spend another day at Cannon or Loon, for some more challenging skiing. A good time, and practically guaranteed to get you laid.

Skidon had a good point  I have guests up this weekend and I am putting together off hill stuff, cause the crowds will get tough. Start of Mass vacation week and Most Nh school's have Monday off also. Waterville has sleigh rides and fireworks if you want something no to costly. There is a days inn in Campton exit 27 dining across the road. Would be cheaper than on mountain stuff.. Waterville would be 20 min Loon 25 min Tenney 10 min. Cannon 25 min..

Let's assume you're coming from the NY/NJ metro area. The first hill that aint a 'Skill would be Mount Snow. From there, Stratton Mountain is 18 miles away, or Okemo 49 miles away, and Killington is 70 miles away.

Brunswick, NJ to Mount Snow, VT - Total Est. Time: 4 hours, 44 minutes Total Est. Distance: 256.48 miles

If you just drive to Killington, it will take you at least 2 days to ski the 7 peaks from Ramshead Mountain to Sunrrise Mountain and you won't want to ski any other hill.

Brunswick, NJ to Killington - 5 hours, 26 minutes Total Est. Distance: 308.22 miles,

But if you did want a 2nd mountain, PICO is right there. 50 trails, 214 acres, 1,967 vertical drop. It's amazing that a 3,967' foot mountain could get so little respect. There are some great deals for places to stay at Pico. Check places like http://www.vermontproperty.com/rentals/killingtonreg.html for condo's on Pico at great rates. And if that doesn't exaust you, try the listings at the Apline Zone.

OTHER MILEAGE INDICATORS:

Brunswick, NJ to Sugarbush
Total Est. Time: 6 hours, 17 minutes Total Est. Distance: 333.02 miles

Brunswick, NJ to Smugglers
Total Est. Time: 6 hours, 39 minutes Total Est. Distance: 385.98 miles

Brunswick, NJ to Stowe
Total Est. Time: 6 hours, 15 minutes Total Est. Distance: 374.76 miles

You might want to keep your options open, there's a possibility of the typical NewEngland mix of snow/sleet/rain before the weekend....

Taking this into account, have you been to Sunday River? They have a great ski and stay package, but you'll be in freakin' school vacation (darn it). It will be crazy, but do try it at some point  . We just got back from a six-day vaca there...incredible conditions. Nice variety.

No surprise...I'd suggest a Jay-Burke combo to avoid the crowds. Burke has no crowds--period. If you like trees both are good. Burke has some good variety. Stay at the new Comfort Inn and Suites in St. Jay or go to a smaller B&B. Good cheap option. You could add a day at Cannon. All three are within an hour of each other...Jay furthest north. Easy to get to Burke and Cannon (right off the interstate). PM me for more.

OK, well, I'd suggest Burke on Sunday before either Cannon or Jay on Monday. Burke's trees are nice as are their cruisers. It is a throwback...don't expect express quads but the terrain is good and there are no crowds. Cheap ski and stay packages.

Just a thought on the Killington/Mount snow trip, a two day ticket would be good at both.

That would be an awesome combination. As would Killington and Pico.

HOLIDAY?

If you are talking about the holiday weekend, 2/18-2/121, you should know that alot of places require 3 night min but it is possible to find a hole fo r maybe a night or two. Also, the MRG/Sugarbush combo is not available during the holiday weekend.

What about a Mt. Snow/Killington combination, Snow on Sunday, Killington on Monday? Does this sound like a good plan? I'd prefer to hit killington on the day when it is less crowded, although I know that this upcoming weekend will be hell.

Does anyone know of any decent lodging in between these two resorts, a la comfort inn or holiday inn, etc?

"Rutvegas" (Rutland, Vermont) has a lot of discount places such as the chains mentioned above. Be forewarned...the rates will be higher as will be the crowds thanks to school vacation week. If you are he^&bent on going to Killington, I'd advise going to Pico to avoid the crowds. Don't give up on Burke...cheaper...real VT...less people to ski around

I'm not tossing Burke aside because I dont want to go there, I'm just afraid that its too far to get to and back from in a reasonable amount of time. It does sound like a great place though.

And thanks for the welcome. :D
