If 2015-2016 was the average Northeast winter, would you still live here?

Would love to live out west during the winter. But water is an issue out there, and it is so dry in the summers usually. I would miss the forest and hiking above it in the summers. Just not the same out west.

If ski conditions were the driver for where I live, I'd already have left the Northeast. But they aren't, so yes I'd still live here if this year were the norm.
That!
Actually the wife told me she only wanted to ski out west a while ago and I was the one who came around to it slower.
And that.

Only I'm the wife and self. I've been doing about 1/2 of skiing out west for the longest time. Losing the other 1/2 would be sad but not significant. (this year is an example, only 4 out of my 20 days so far are in the northeast) I would ski less but then I would have a lot more time to hike and do other activities, which is why I LIKE living here. (I've lived out west for a few years. Enjoyed it at the time but didn't particularly want to stay out there for good)

So because of the above two reason/solution, I'd still be living here.

Actually, the part that hurts the most is cross country skiing because they don't make snow. I didn't get a single day in this year. Not here in the northeast, not out west either.

You maybe the only person I've met who doesn't like that town.

I've lived around here all my life, in Northampton for 10 years in all neighborhoods. I'm up in Florence now (neighborhood to the north of the center of town) because it's more low key.

I grew up in more rural hilltowns and the Prius driving coffee shop hipster Bernie Sanders sign on every yard and vehicle culture isn't really my thing. Downtown is a mess of junkies begging for change, and the town offices officially adopt every liberal social priority such as putting a Black Lives Matter sign on the town hall and painting the sidewalk in front of it in rainbow colors.

If you're really liberal and want the immerse yourself in that culture this is a great place to live. I moved here for the scene when I was younger, now I'm tired of it.

That said the Pioneer Valley in general is a great place to live there's a lot of really nice towns and other towns right nearby with completely different cultures, so you can take your pick.

Oh, so because you don't agree with the politics of many of the inhabitants = awful town. Got it.

I more think of some of your neighbors to the south as being awful because of actual real quality of life problems - violent crime, vacant buildings filled with vagrants, inadequate tax revenues to provide solid services. Chicopee, Springfield etc.

Glad you have found something out there that works for you though

Would I still live here? - Yes. Family is the strongest magnet, but business and house/land ownership is in the mix.

I have also had many epic ski years here and love the Greens, ADKs and Whites, oh yeah Maine too. This year was not particularly good for anyone, but I am reminded that other years were as bad or worse (I had to be reminded because I ave blocked out the bad ones).

Now if the weather pattern continues to warm, I may have to brush up on my french. Oui?

Echoing what many have said, if this were the historical average I likely would not be nearly as avid of a skier as I am.

If this became the typical winter, it would be pretty hard for me to leave right now with family, business, kids etc etc. so I would still live here for now anyway.

I would alter my habits and be making more western trips etc

I'm sure mine wasn't the first or last opinion you'll ever hear regarding someone's home town. I could go into "actual problems" like massive homeless population, way more narcotics than normal in a town this size, piss poor drinking water, the whole downtown situation (which if you're a resident you'd know exactly what I mean by that). But why bother telling someone from NH about my hometown's problems. I'm sure you've heard there's good concerts here and there's nice restaurants and stuff. The town does have its upsides. There's a lot of lipstick on this pig.

Family is the issue really.

I do love PA. Don't really think I could leave. Personally, if I had to make the jump I wouldn't stay in the US, probably pick a place overseas. Maybe New Zealand... Switzerland is beautiful as well and a good place to get a job in my field. I like Vancouver, Canada as well.

Fair enough. I've spent about a dozen nights in Northampton for work the past two years. I've spent the same amount of time in Springfield. Guess where I'd rather end my day?

I spend about 100 nights a year in hotels all over New England while traveling for work. Northampton would rank near the very bottom of my list of "awful" places. But, opinions vary.....

Im not a big fan of planting roots anywhere...i like to change scenery. I like to come back to nh for family/friends/ and fun new england summertime stuff but come october i cant get out fast enough. I start to get itchy feet out here pretty soon. Its the in between seasons going across slowly i think i like best. Sooner or later ill stop, where ill end up is anyone's guess.

Jobs or the economy was/is a big factor for me. If I took on the same profession I will still be stuck with either the west or east coast. I've lived in Palo Alto CA, had fun there and could have seen myself settling down in that area.

If this was a typical winter, I would be staying right here for many reasons. But most of my 5 weeks holidays would be spent in ski country all around the world, including summer.
